Legendary producer Joe Boyd first told me he was writing a book about world music when we were listening to a recital by some Indian musicians in a delightful perfumed garden one sun-dappled afternoon at a festival in Jodhpur in 2007. HAS HI-FI REINVENTED itself? Tricky. It’s all a matter of perspective. If you’re a die-hard, purist audiophile endlessly floating in a steady state universe where a turntable, amplifier and pair of speakers will do very nicely thank you, nothing much has changed. And come what may regarding the next big thing, that will likely always be the case. Those less concerned about being swept along by the expanding, technology-led convenience/convergence zeitgeist, though, might well be riding the perfect wave where pure sonic excellence matches and – whisper it – even exceeds that of the classic, lovingly curated passive separates system with all its audiophile affirming cables and clutter. A reinvention? Maybe we’re heading for a revolution. Right now, the jury’s out, but the on-going march of active/wireless speakers is undeniable…

Although System Audio, the Danish company – founded and run by Ole Witthøft – makes a fine range of passive speakers, these are mirrored by its active Silverback counterparts which, overall, have soaked up the lion’s share of critical acclaim, including numerous EiSA awards. It wasn’t so very long ago that Direct Metal Mastering was heralded as the new era for vinyl as it promised much better sound quality. However, it seemed to go out of fashion as quickly as it arrived. But before we get into that, it is worth explaining how records are traditionally made. The source material must be transferred to a lacquer master disc, whether straight from the microphone/mixing desk – as with a ‘direct-to-disc’ recording – or from a digital master or analogue tape. The lacquer disc is an aluminium plate coated with a lacquer material.
