Catholic Church of Mexico After the Mexican Supreme Court ruled on November 4 in favor of legalizing recreational cultivation and consumption for four individuals—thus paving the way for legalization nationwide—the Catholic Church condemned the ruling. The Archdiocese of Mexico City decried the “incredibly irresponsible decision that follows certain fads.” Pope Francis has likewise rejected the decriminalization of drugs. ISIS The Islamic State’s extremists are completely hypocritical. Fundamentalist Islam prohibits selling and using pot, and ISIS claimed responsibility for burning down Syrian marijuana fields in August 2014. Yet according to an April 2015 article in the Daily Beast, a Lebanese pot farmer—a Shiite who has fought against ISIS—confirmed that he sold one ton of blond hash to ISIS members last March, which he speculated was meant to fund their terrorist activities.…

Cannabis testing lab professionals as well as pot shop owners in Oregon are predicting a likely spike in medical and retail marijuana prices next year due to new regulations taking effect in June 2016. The Health Authority released a list of 59 pesticides that will have to be tested for in Oregonian legal weed, forcing labs to make investments in equipment to check pot for pesticides as well as increase labor hours to undertake such testing. These factors will inevitably drive up prices for the cannabis consumer. Dispensary owners agree that the requirements will drive up all costs, which will ultimately be passed on to the customer. According to a study from the federal government, the majority of Americans recently “treated” for marijuana abuse were referred there by the criminal justice system. These sobering stats were released by the US Department of Health and Human Services in December 2015. The report finds that roughly 52 percent of all Americans 12 and older in rehab for pot between 2003-2013 were forced there by the criminal justice system (i.e., probation or parole officers, the courts, etc.). Incredibly, the government’s own study finds only 18 percent of all those in treatment for pot admitted themselves, meaning most individuals in reefer rehab are being forced to participate. Stealing marijuana is never smart. However, it’s especially dumb to pilfer pot from a law enforcement evidence room. Yet that is exactly what Roderette Dewrayne McClure was sentenced for in Tyler, Texas Federal Court. McClure received 56 months in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute 110 pounds of pot he swiped from an East Texas Marshal’s office. During the break-in, McClure actually tried to cover up the crime by replacing the pot with fire-starter logs. He also left behind a fake note written in Spanish along with a map with directions from Brownsville, TX in a ham-handed attempt to make authorities believe a Mexican cartel was responsible for the theft. McClure didn’t limit himself to pot during his ill-conceived spree—he also stole cocaine, prescription drugs and firearms from the evidence…

A Canadian judge fined a marijuana grower a mere C$1, denouncing Canada’s pot prohibition laws as “outdated and ridiculous” and referencing Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau’s plans to eventually legalize recreational cannabis. Mario Larouche, 46, was charged with growing 30 pot plants. He was facing 90 days in jail. Instead, Justice Pierre Chevalier imposed the symbolic one loonie fine on Mr. Larouche—who uses marijuana to manage pain stemming from a car accident in 2000. Not only did Justice Chevalier refuse to legitimize the charges with a serious fine or jail sentence, he also openly questioned the wisdom of sentencing anyone to jailfor a substance that half of all Canadians, including lawyers and judges, have sampled. Illinois’ pot patients had to wait nearly two years for the state to implement its medical marijuana program. Better late than never. During the first month of legal medical pot sales, a total of 1,713 registered patients purchased nearly $801,000 worth of weed from 16 state-licensed dispensaries . There was good news for the cashed strapped state as well. Thanks to a 7 percent tax on wholesale marijuana sales, Illinois collected about $56,550 in taxes in the first month alone. The encouraging figures were announced by Program Director Joseph Wright. Unfortunately, prices are still a bit high as the average gram costs about $14.50. Another unmistakable political tea leaf regarding the impending legalization of cannabis can now be found at the highest level of American politics: the race for president. With the latest Gallup polling showing that nearly 60 percent of the US population favors legalization, direct questions on the issue of cannabis prohibition are regularly being asked of the candidates in nationally televised debates. This trend began in earnest during the 2008 presidential election. Nearly 5,000 pounds of pot—almost two and half tons—were confiscated by US Customs and Border Protection at New Mexico’s Santa Teresa Port of Entry in the biggest marijuana seizure there in over a decade. Officials were initially suspicious of two tankers hauled by a flatbed tractor-trailer. X-rays showed anomalies in the tankers and closer examination revealed a “green substance” that tested positive for pot. Border agents then drilled into the bottom of the two tankers, locating hidden compartments in each that contained a grand total of 4,938 pounds of compressed cannabis with an estimated street value of more than $3.9 million. According to the assistant port director, “This is the largest drug bust at Santa Teresa since February 1, 2002, when a 5,263-pound marijuana seizure was made at the port.”…
