Despite the prohibitionist hysteria over legal pot, the sky still hasn’t fallen after four years of recreational marijuana in Colorado. In fact, even the old canard that legal weed will increase underage pot use is on the ropes, as the latest study shows that current use among Colorado’s teens is actually lower than the national average. The Colorado Department of Public Health’s biannual Healthy Kids Colorado Survey reports that nearly four out of five high-school students don’t use cannabis at all. Only 21 percent reported smoking pot at least once within a 30-day period in 2015. The tech giant announced that it would make the leap into legal pot by partnering with LA-based Kind Financial on Agrisoft, a cannabis-compliance software program that tracks plants from seed to sale. Such tracking is already mandatory in Colorado and could be the centerpiece of legislation in several other states that are looking to legalize pot, as it helps to ensure that cannabis is legally cultivated, distributed, and sold rather than diverted to the black market. After 12 years in federal prison, Weldon Angelos is a free man. Now 36, he received a 55-year sentence in 2004 for selling pot to a confidential informant on two occasions. Although it was his first drug offense, Angelos fell victim to mandatory-minimum sentencing because he was allegedly in possession of a handgun during the deals. Mandatory-minimum laws require judges to impose incredibly harsh prison terms on offenders regardless of the extenuating circumstances. Judge Paul Cassell was deeply disturbed by the draconian sentence he was forced to impose and never stopped advocating for Angelos. While many swear by pot’s power as an aphrodisiac and sexual enhancer, pop star Nick Jonas recently revealed that cannabis’s amorous side effects can, um, arise at inopportune moments.
