The National Football League has updated its drug policy to include synthetic marijuana as a banned substance. The decision to begin testing for synthetic pot—commonly known as K2 or Spice—came during the annual drugs-and-steroids policy negotiation between the NFL and the Players Association. Synthetic marijuana now joins cocaine, PCP, cannabis, opiates, opioids, MDMA and amphetamines on the NFL’s standard drug-testing panel. Two high-profile incidents involving NFL players and synthetic marijuana may have led to the policy change. While some media outlets have chosen hysteria over facts when reporting on driving under the influence of weed, newly released data from the Montana Department of Justice provide a legitimately disconcerting look at which controlled substance is being used most often by people arrested for impaired driving. According to Montana’s Forensic Science Division, methamphetamine surpassed cannabis as the most common narcotic detected in DUI blood tests in 2015. While alcohol remains the most prevalent substance detected in DUIs, meth outpaced marijuana for the first time, according to a recent report from the state crime lab. In 2015, meth accounted for 294 DUI cases in Montana—up from 73 in 2011. The crime lab also noted significant spikes in positive meth tests for parolees and in postmortem drug screens. Oregon voters legalized recreational marijuana in 2014. However, 2016 was the first full year of legal cannabis retail—and a cannabis sales tax. So how are things going 10 months into the Beaver State’s retail-pot program? According to officials, the state is raking in so much cash that it may have to create a separate regulatory agency just to manage the income. Through September 2016, the Oregon Department of Revenue took in more than $40 million in THC taxes. These mediums are better suited for indoor gardens than outdoor topsoil because they carry fewer pests, diseases, bacteria and mold. Standard topsoil is rarely used indoors anymore. Soilless mediums generally come pre-mixed with beneficial amendments like perlite, wood chips and, at times, mild nutrient additives. Many advanced growers will mix their own ratios of base medium (most often coco coir) with additives that absorb and retain moisture as well as others that help aerate the medium. A 48-year-old Australian man faces life in prison after getting busted with just over seven grams of hash in Bali. The island is part of Indonesia, a country with some of the harshest drug laws on the planet. Police in Bali’s southeastern town of Sanur discovered the hash in a suitcase at the home of Giuseppe Serafino, who has resided in Bali for five years. The cops convinced Serafino to name the person who sold him the hash, a 54-year-old retired British journalist identified only as “DM,” who was later arrested by authorities with 10.09 grams. Both men have been charged under Article 112 of Indonesian law with possession of a Category 1 narcotic, which carries a minimum penalty of five years and a maximum sentence of life in prison.…

While marijuana is legal in Oregon, there are apparently limits: For example, for some reason, you can’t trade a pound of pot for a snowmobile. That was the lesson learned by Jason Owen, 29, who attempted to set up the recreational-pot-for-recreational-vehicle barter via Craigslist. Unfortunately, Owen didn’t realize he was proposing the trade to a state trooper. Rather than laugh off Owen’s offer, the overzealous trooper opted to take it to the agency’s drug-enforcement office. When dealing with water culture, the old adage of “Less is more” certainly holds true. For beginners, it is definitely important to remember that you can always increase the dosage, but it’s extremely difficult to remedy overfeeding. As an example, studies have shown that gardens using nutrient solutions with high parts-per-million (ppm) levels of dissolved solids were consuming less water on a daily basis. When the ppm was lowered, the plants drank much more. The reason is that the high ppm levels created by overfertilizing caused higher osmotic pressure at the molecular level. A sobering report released by Human Rights Watch estimates that one person is arrested for personal drug possession every 25 seconds. Nationwide, police make more arrests for possession than any other crime, and with each passing minute, at least two people in America have their lives permanently altered for getting high. The report, Every 25 Seconds: The Human Toll of Criminalizing Drug Use in the United States, incorporates over 365 interviews with those arrested and prosecuted for drug use, as well as with attorneys, officials and activists. Human Rights Watch found that more than one out of every nine arrests made by state law-enforcement agents are for possession, totaling more than 1.25 million drug busts each year. The DEA’s latest rejection of a petition to reschedule cannabis under the Controlled Substances Act came in August of 2016. However, the US Food and Drug Administration weighed in a year earlier, providing the DEA with its own recommendation in 2015. MOST OF US know the basics of how concentrates are made: Cannabis is soaked in a solvent, which dissolves the cannabinoids and terpenes; the solvent is then evaporated, and what’s left behind is a very concentrated form of the plant’s active ingredients. Now that we’re all on the same page, let’s look a little deeper into the solvents most commonly used for making extracts. A solvent’s polarity refers to the electrical charge it carries. Polar solvents, such as water, have an electrical charge due to the arrangement of atoms in their molecules. Polarity is the reason that oil and water will not mix into a solution.
