According to newly released data, the number of cases of “marijuana treatment” for failed THC tests is so over-prioritized in Philadelphia that the city is having difficulty arranging treatment for opioid addicts.
The findings are based on data assembled via the city’s Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services, as reported by philly.com.
From 2011, the year that heroin deaths spiked sharply in Philly, through 2015, over 20 percent of the admissions to treatment centers were for cannabis use—and in some of those years, the people admitted to pot programs outnumbered those treated for deadly heroin addiction.
In 2014, the city spent $28 million on 8,363 treatment admissions, with 1,844 being for marijuana, while just 1,764 were for heroin.
