It’s probably futile to attempt to read the tea leaves around marijuana-related stocks, since the only trend we’ve seen is volatility, and that’s no trend at all. However, some observers noted the positive movement on pot stocks immediately following the midterm elections in the United States, with a discernible bump a day later when Jeff Sessions was relieved of his post as attorney general. Bloomberg reported that exchange-traded funds that track cannabis stocks, such as the Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF in Canada and the US-listed ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF, both of which popped on the news, gained as much as 9.1 percent and 7.9 percent, respectively. It appears licensed producers (LPs) are not far enough ahead to keep up with the demand created by legalization. The black market will pick up the slack in the short term. This is a problem with the supply of legally produced weed, and the shortage is expected to become more pronounced as the year progresses. A Montana inmate says it is his God-given, which is to say religious, right to smoke weed in jail. Adam Owen Grady, 34, who is serving a five-year stretch in the Missoula county jail for possession (of explosives!), has filed a federal complaint to reinstate this right. Citing a verse from Genesis—the one where God says he gifted mankind “every herb bearing seed”—Grady said, “It is my Godly Rights to consume marijuana for Christian rights [sic],” according to the Missoulian. His jailors disagree. “Marijuana is a federally band [sic] substance and is not allowed in correctional/detention settings. A neurologist in Jerusalem had begun experimenting with medical cannabis as a treatment for those with autism [based on the] marijuana plant’s two primary compounds: the psychoactive agent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), which works with the autistic mind. The good news is that vaporizers deliver a stronger dose of THC than conventional smoking. The bad news is that vaping also delivers more of the “adverse effects” of weed, whatever those are. Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Pharmacology Research Unit dosed 17 participants with weed, comparing the two delivery systems, and found that vaping delivers more of the good (and bad) stuff. Their findings were published in JAMA Network Open. After consuming zero, 10 or 25 milligrams of THC, the volunteers filled out questionnaires, took cognitive tests and had their vitals monitored. Vaping brought greater concentrations of THC to the subjects’ blood, and led to more errors in the cognition tests. Ohio law requires that 15 percent of cannabis licenses—to grow, process, sell and test medical weed—go to minority-owned concerns. As such, the state’s Department of Commerce awarded two of the 12 cultivation licenses to minority ganjapreneurs. But a couple of companies passed over to fulfill this requirement cried foul and took the department to court. Franklin County Judge Charles Schneider sided with the plaintiffs and ruled the law unconstitutional.
