At last, the complete genome of the cannabis plant has been mapped. A group of researchers in Canada and the US unearthed some interesting factoids in the project, including the revelation that the genes that encode for THC and CBD evolved from viruses introduced millions of years ago. Their findings, published in the journal Genome Research, also revealed the presence of the gene that produces cannabichromene (CBC), a lesser-known cannabinoid. The researchers’ “combined physical and genetic map” was derived from a cross between Purple Kush and the hemp variety Finola. The team had published a partial genome in 2011, but now they have the whole magilla, and that portends well for growers and others. Massachusetts is newly legal, but legislation to protect people who exercise their legal rights is lagging behind. Case in point: Workers who are subject to drug testing are at risk of losing their jobs. This travesty befell Bernadette Coughlin, a patient services manager for Sodexo, who was sacked after testing positive for weed last year. In Port St. Lucie, FL a young man allegedly tried using his weed as currency at a McDonald’s drive-through. According to the Port St. Lucie police, on a December morning at approximately 2 a.m., 23-year-old Anthony Andrew Gallagher attempted to pay for his food order with a baggie of dope. The McDonald’s server passed and so Gallagher drove off without paying at all.
