A 4/20 cannabis sales analysis published by industry data platform Headset explored this year’s sales patterns and noteworthy changes in areas such as store discounts and consumer behavior. On the flipside, the federal government also tracks the potency of cannabis pulled off the illegal market. Nearly all sources show that legal and illicit cannabis is getting more potent. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) released the 2024 National Drug Threat Assessment (NDTA) on May 9 showing data on illegal drugs that were seized by the DEA and other organizations. A study published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence journal in April explored the anxiety-inducing effects of the citrus terpene d-limonene in cannabis and how it is impacted by the entourage effect—or the meaningful influence or benefits of consuming more than one cannabinoid and/or terpenes. Researchers prepared four combinations to administer to a total of 20 patients, which included giving participants either 15 mg or 30 mg of THC, 1 mg or 5 mg of d-limonene alone, a combination of THC (15 mg or 30 mg) and d-limonene (1 mg or 5 mg), or a placebo. (Additionally, 12 patients were given 30 mg THC and 15 mg d-limonene.) Senate Bill 494, also called the Georgia Hemp Farming Act, was signed into law by Gov. Brian Kemp on April 30. The law established regulations for licensing for hemp cultivation, manufacturing, and sales, and solidified the legal age for possession and sale of hemp for adults 21 and over. “This bill makes changes to the framework for hemp regulations in Georgia… ensuring products are safe for our consumers,” said Kemp in a press statement. Now the Georgia Department of Agriculture is authorized to enforce laws related to hemp regulations, and the law also establishes new rules about packaging requirements and labeling, as well as marketing rules, which were created to protect children. New findings published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings journal shows that fibromyalgia syndrome patients are frequently using cannabis in order to manage their symptoms. In a participant pool of 1,336 fibromyalgia patients from Minnesota, 661 said that they started using cannabis after being diagnosed with the condition, using it to treat pain (98.9%), fatigue (96.2%), stress, anxiety, or depression (93.9%), and insomnia (93.6%). Additionally, 82% of this group said they experience an improvement in pain symptoms, and most respondents said they experienced improvements to stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Canadian medical cannabis exports continue to rise, according to Health Canada data from the 2023-2024 fiscal year. While the total value of medical cannabis exports was reported at approximately $160 million in Canadian dollars ($117 million USD) for the 2022-2023 fiscal year, the most recent fiscal year data shows that Canada exported $218 million CA (or $160 million USD). The amount of cannabis exported has also increased with exports between January-December 2022, reflecting 115,972 kilograms of dried cannabis, and approximately 210,494 kilograms of dried cannabis exported between January-December 2023. The Germany Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) released a report in April showing that the country imported 31,398 kilograms (approximately 34.6 tons) of cannabis in 2023. The most recent data on Germany imports shows that this is a record-breaking amount compared to imports from 2022, about a 26.2% increase with only 24,876 kilograms (or 27.4 tons). The country began recording its imports starting in 2018, when it only imported 4,480 kilograms (4.9 tons), followed by 8,057 kilograms (8.88 tons) in 2019, 11,746 kilograms (12.9 tons) in 2020, and a significant jump to 20,771 kilograms (22.9 tons) in 2021.
