Some 70,000 visitors, 135 countries represented and 2,975 exhibitors: these are the impressive numbers recorded this year by the Heimtextil Fair in Frankfurt. Held in January, Heimtextil once again proved to be a must-attend for the industry. When interior designer Kelly Wearstler first set eyes on this house in the West Hollywood district of Los Angeles, she was anything but impressed. “It didn’t have anything exciting,” she recalls. “I remember walking in and thinking, ‘Oh my God! I’m going to have to really roll up my sleeves here.’” Previously, the home featured a Spanish architectural vernacular, with interiors dominated by brown ceiling beams and all-white walls. “You’ve got about 10 seconds to put the plants down before the sun starts printing,” explains fabric designer Amanda du Plessis, the founder of Evolution Product. When she makes her exquisite Botanical Blueprint and Silverprint Silhouette hand-printed fabrics, she starts with locally woven linen that’s been dipped in light-sensitive chemicals and spread out in the sun. She’ll have carefully composed arrangements of indigenous plants and grasses that she’s collected from the nearby Melville Koppies nature reserve, with the print they’ll leave behind in mind. The Ukraine-born, US-transplanted artist creates porcelain flowers by hand, sculpting and moulding clay to make his beautiful blooms look entirely real.
