Cape Town-based magazine editor, stylist and interior designer Laureen Rossouw first saw this house five years ago. She and her husband Koos were about to move out of their City Bowl apartment, and she spotted a picture of ‘a dilapidated house with classic Bauhaus lines’ in the newspaper. “I thought it might be a bad picture or wishful thinking,” she says, but she rapidly made her way to the house, which was in the ideal location in the City Bowl suburb of Oranjezicht, on the edge of one of Cape Town’s most charming parks. Imbued with a rich history, Eastman Village is a landmark development on the 55-acre site of the former Kodak film factory in Harrow, which closed in 2016 after decades of decline. The village’s name pays tribute to George Eastman – the founder of Kodak, who invented roll film and brought photography to the masses. Today, the neighbourhood is being rejuvenated as part of a larger £1.75 billion improvement scheme. Plans for Eastman Village include 1,800 new homes, a school, shops, leisure facilities, and a new medical centre. Most restaurants put you next to art, some surround you with it. At Mile City in Yunnan, a Chinese restaurant allows you to dine within it. Conceived by Hong Kong firm Cheng Chung Design (CCD), 50% Cloud – a name inspired by the building’s resemblance of clouds – is cocooned within one of the funnel-shaped buildings in Dongfengyun Town in Mile City, Yunnan.
