Amazing Archive 1838 Wallcoverings was given the opportunity to delve into the extensive V&A archive to look for inspiration for its latest collection. Decorative wallpapers, fabrics, watercolour illustrations and even an embroidered kimono were selected to form the basis of nine different wallpaper designs, in a total of over 30 colourways. Before they became watchwords, people in centuries past knew all about make do and mend and repair what you wear. From the medieval era to the 19th century, buying cloth and then sewing garments at home was expensive in terms of time and money. Most people owned few clothes and if a garment was worn or torn it was repaired. If it no longer fitted, extra fabric might be let in or out or it was unpicked and made into a different garment. Some garments were designed with the prospect of alteration built in, including tucks in children’s clothing for letting out as the child grew. Collecting WHY I COLLECT We met when we were 15 and 16 at a Young Farmers barn dance, when Jonathon was on holiday in Wales with his parents. At 18 we moved into a cottage together in Wales, and have lived there ever since. Love spoons are probably as important to Welsh people as headdresses are to Native Americans - they’re woven into our society, history culture. They’re iconic. We bought our first love spoons about 30 years ago - they were modern spoons with less hand carving and more machine working but we soon realised we related to the older spoons far more. Antique love spoons are so infinitely variable. There’s a very personal story connected to each one. Traditionally they were made by a suitor for his sweetheart, but…

The cornicing in our house is original Victorian, but a previous owner had covered the entire end walls of several bedrooms in huge fitted wardrobes. Thankfully, they hadn’t removed the cornicing, but it had been damaged in several places, with small cracks and dings where it had been bashed around over the years, and some was covered in thick paint that was flaking away and had to be removed. We tackled the prep work and repaired the cracks and smaller areas of damage ourselves: once we’d removed the wardrobes, old layers of paint on the cornicing had to be painstakingly chipped away by hand to minimise damage to the original plasterwork underneath. THE ANTIQUE Snowdrop Motifs Midwinter is here but, even during the coldest months, snowdrops are pushing up through the frosty earth, bringing elegance to our gardens, parks and woodlands, and the promise of spring. As such, snowdrops are viewed as a symbol of hope and regeneration and have found their way onto many an antique piece, from vases and plates to jewellery, metalwares, textiles and wallpaper. For example, their pretty nodding heads can be found on late 19th-century art glass by French makers Émile Gallé and the Daum Brothers, and on enamel panels used to decorate pewter trinket boxes made in the Art Nouveau style. In l86l, William Morris and his collaborators set up the home furnishings company Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co, creating furniture and decor in what was to become known as the Arts and Crafts style. Sussex seated furniture was one of the most popular ranges, introduced in the 1860s and produced well into the 1920s. It was originally inspired by a Georgian chair found in Sussex, hence the name, and the designer is thought to have been the architect Philip Webb, who cocreated Red House in Bexleyheath with and for William Morris. The Sussex range has ebonised beech frames and rush seats and comprised side chairs, armchairs, settles, corner chairs and even children’s chairs. WALES Dealer Tim Bowen, who specialises in Welsh country furniture and folk art, says coffer bachs - small marriage chests - are popular with buyers today. Miniature imitations of larger grain or linen chests, they are particular to Wales and date from the 1700s to the 1920s. ‘They are regarded as love or dowry chests and often contained a Bible and pieces of precious linen,’ reveals Tim. ‘The’re not painted and are rarely marked with dates or initials like eastern European ones can be, but the inlay work on them is very special.’ Mostly made from oak (although Tim has seen a few in elm), they are sometimes decorated with contrasting woods such as bog oak and holiy. ‘The decoration would have been even more striking when it was first…

The fascination with antiques has always been there. Even as a very young child I was intrigued by the items that family members and friends would put on display in their homes. One of the reasons many people visit Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum is to see up close the masterful everyday scenes painted by Johannes Vermeer. I joined The Burrell Renaissance Project in 2016 as an assistant project curator, and in 2018 I became a project curator. My role has involved researching the collection and helping to create and develop the new galleries and displays of objects for the refurbished museum, which reopened in March. Now the collection has opened to the public, I am focused on European Decorative Art from 1603-1850, including silver, ceramics, glass and furniture. One of the greatest challenges during The Burrell Renaissance Project was connecting local audiences to a collection of over 9,000 objects that come from all around the world and span six millennia. The architectural flourish of interior cornicing dates back to the Ancient Greeks and remains a popular aesthetic touch today; a means of elegantly concealing the join between wall and ceiling. Modern cornices tend to be fairly plain, but many period homes still showcase their original ornate (enriched) mouldings. Wear and tear to any kind of cornicing really draws the eye and should be addressed as soon as possible, to prevent any problems from getting worse. ‘The most common source of damage to old cornice is moisture; says Russell Brewis of cornice experts Artisan Plastercraft. ‘This can be dampness over time, or a water episode such as a flood or burst pipe.
