During the first decades of the 20th century, fine art moved beyond Impressionism to embrace graphic colour and abstraction. Modernism beckoned, while class distinction separating the work of painters and sculptors from pattern and product design began to fall away. French painter Raoul Dufy, who exhibited with the Fauve movement in Paris, set the ball rolling through this invisible divide in 1910. Needing a further source of income, he took commissions for textile designs from the couturier Paul Poiret. He used his own carved woodblocks for printing, and his designs for fashion were so successful that Dufy went on to accept a contract to supply designs to Lyon textile manufacturer Bianchini-Férier. THE ANTIQUE Gordon Russell furniture As champions of heritage design, this month we turn our attentions to Gordon Russell (1892-1980), one of the best-known British furniture designers of the 20th century. He played an integral part in the Festival of Britain in 1951 and was knighted in 1955 in recognition of his services to design and industry. Gordon was brought up in Broadway in the Cotswolds where his family owned the Lygon Arms hotel. He left school at 16 to work in the family business, which included an antiques repair workshop. Watching the joiners at work, coupled with an interest in the Arts and Crafts movement, inspired Gordon's passion for design. Heirlooms of the Future If you haven't seen ceramic artist Susan O'Byrne's work before, be warned that an encounter with one of her sculptures will probably stop you in your tracks. Like stumbling across a wild animal while out walking in the forest, coming face-to-face with one of these exquisite, watchful creatures is a surprising, humbling, even emotional experience. Not that you would mistake one of Susan's animals for a real wild animal. Made from clay, built over a wire skeleton, they are roughly life-siced, and are instantly recognisable as hare, boar, goat, or deer, and Susan has captured in them – uncannily almost – the poise and expression of their real-life counterparts. Stick the kettle on, make a brew and pour a cuppa – tea has become such a habitual daily pleasure for many of us that we make and drink it almost without thinking, and certainly don't often stop to question how it has become such an intrinsic part of our lives. Today, tea is cheap – you can buy 160 teabags for 99p in the supermarket – but when it was first introduced to England in the late 1650s, tea was a luxury commodity that few could afford. A pound of tea cost 60 shillings (about £300 now). Collecting In Paris, 1822, a group of excited guests gathered together in a dark building to witness a cutting-edge immersive theatrical experience, the like of which had never been seen before. French artists Charles-Marie Bouton (1781-1853) and Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre (1787-1851) were the brains behind this astounding new spectacle, known as The Diorama. Captivated audiences viewed enormous hand-painted linen scenes (the proscenium was 7.3m wide and 6.4m high) conjuring up dramatic vistas such as 'The Holyrood Chapel' and 'The Ruins in a Fog'. Multi-layered, cleverly illuminated and enhanced by sound effects and music, the scene would appear to shift and change, depending on the direction and intensity of artfully manipulated lighting. A clock to captivate Estimate £20,000-£30,000 Sold £100,800 At Christie's earlier this year, 250 works of art were consigned for sale by three antiques-dealer dynasties based in London, Paris and Geneva. The goodies included furniture, decorative arts and clocks made by some of the most celebrated French craftsmen and factories of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, such as furnituremaker André-Charles Boulle. Among them was lot 84, a sinuous, mid 18th-century, gilded 'cartel' clock, designed to hang directly on the wall. The clock's movement was made by master clockmaker Jean-Baptiste Baillon, who was famous for his pocket watches decorated with diamond flowers. Travel When Studio 54 founders Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell opened Morgans Hotel in New York in 1984 it changed holidaying culture overnight. As the mini skirt was to fashion, or Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum to architecture, the world's first boutique hotel stole a march on conventional hotels, reinventing the genre with its thrilling design, must-eat restaurant and sassy approach to service. So successful was the format that not only did the big hotel chains start offering everything from individually designed bedrooms to pillow menus, but holiday cottage owners and B&B proprietors followed suit. By the late Noughties, the boutique B&B was the connoisseur's accommodation of choice. Characterful and hard to replicate, they also served as a three-dimensional mood board for design-obsessed travellers looking for interiors ideas to try at home.…

THE ANTIQUES THAT SHAPED ME What first sparked your interest in antiques? I caught the antiques bug very early; I can't remember a time when I wasn't interested in history and the decorative arts. Growing up in Ireland, I developed a deep love of Georgian architecture and the romance of the elegantly dilapidated. The past seemed so glamorous – a fantasy world I could escape to. As a child, I befriended all the local antiques dealers. One in particular encouraged me to learn about silver marks, and I began buying odd teaspoons with my pocket money. For those of us who are not experts, it's still well worth learning more about the conservation of such buildings – especially if you live in one – and there are courses and workshops to help you gain an insight into different aspects of their upkeep. 1840 'Cadogan' Made by Copeland & Garrett, this teapot is a copy of a Chinese wine pot and is attributed to Lady Cadogan, who liked to amuse her guests with this design. It has no visible means of getting the tea into the pot, but was in fact filled through a hole in the base, with tea made in another vessel. 1886 'Self-Pouring' Designed by John J. Royle and made by Royal Doulton, this clever teapot enabled the hostess to pour the tea without lifting the teapot, by means of a cunning pump concealed in the lid. Collecting 'Knitting sheaths are a tangible connection to a lost part of our history,' says Sarah White, Fashion, Costume & Textiles Specialist at Tennants Auctioneers. 'We don't know very much about the lives of the poor working people who mainly used them. Like the antique quilts painstakingly sewn together from tiny scraps of worn fabric, knitting sheaths mostly belonged to the people at the bottom of society rather than the top. They haven't left many written records, and didn't have a lot of other possessions, so the sheaths are a window into their world.' Welcome to the wonderful world of Leeds creamware, a ceramic genre christened after the city pottery that was once a major centre of production, although far from being the first – or the only —factory to make these distinctive wares.
