Every year we have friends to stay during the festive season and we enjoy leisurely meals alongside plenty of country walks. Returning to a warm and welcoming home after a bracing stroll is one of my favourite winter moments, especially if the fires haven’t completely gone out and there is still some cake left to accompany a pot of tea. For guests this New Year’s Day, I’m going to prepare the delicious lunch menu on page 62, which offers a perfect selection of dishes to celebrate the arrival of 2017. Can you describe the project? This is a lovely 1930s detached period house at the end of a quiet street in Barnes, west London. Jacey and Jules Topham bought it with a view to extending, as they wanted to create a relaxed open-plan kitchen, dining and living space for family life with their four young daughters. What inspired the look? Jacey has an interior design background and had thought a lot about the overall feel and finishes. Her ideas ran along the lines of industrial, although she wanted the minimalist space to also feel homely. The floor was a big influence – Jacey chose it before she met us and wanted to bring oak into the cabinetry to create a link. Precisely matching oak across different elements can be tricky,…

Can you describe the project? The principal rooms of this handsome Grade II-listed house in London enjoy leafy views to the front and rear. We were asked to bring a timeless style to the interiors and the brief for this bedroom was to create a light, luxurious space with elegant and considered detailing. Did the room’s shape pose any challenges? Originally, there was an asymmetrical chimney breast in the room, but with careful partitioning we were able to lose this detail and restore a pleasing symmetry to the space. It now incorporates a striking walk-in dressing room with bespoke grey fumed oak and glass joinery, which leads to a huge bathroom finished with Calacatta Oro marble. HOW CAN I KEEP MY CHRISTMAS TREE? I’ve bought a Christmas tree with its roots and planted it in a large pot to bring indoors and decorate. Can it be kept in the container to bring in again next year, and how should I look after it? DY, London N2. Can you describe the property? Designed by visionary Victorian builder Alfred Heaver, this beautiful property in south-west London is now a substantial family home for Sid and Nancy McGrath and their 14-year-old twins, Spike and Betsy. Can you tell us about your arts background and training? I studied BA drawing at Falmouth School of Art, graduating in 2014. For more than 20 years, Lucinda Oakes has been creating wallpapers, screens, panels and fabrics, inspired by traditional trompe-l’oeil designs as well as the rich patterns of classical chinoiserie. Wanja Marriott could be forgiven if, upon moving into her first-floor apartment in Oslo’s desirable West End, she had painted the walls white and embraced the monochromatic scheme so associated with the Scandinavian aesthetic. The late 19th-century flat, in a four-storey building just streets away from the Royal Palace and the sea, had the architectural details for it: high ceilings, lots of light, large windows and pale hardwood floors. For Wanja, however, whose love of global design is evident from the tribal artefacts and photographs of far-flung places, this was not an option. Bringing flowers into the home can be so life enhancing. Arrangements do not have to be masterly creations; a few stems in a vase makes all the difference. In my new book, Flourish, I want to inspire you to think differently when choosing flowers and colours. When you go for walks in parks and woodlands, look at the way plants grow in their natural habitat and study their shapes, colours and tone. My style of arranging is wild and natural; I am not good at tight, neat symmetry. Foliage is key, the more the better. In spring, I love the fresh, lime greens of young branches, but six months later, in the autumn, my displays are filled with deep reds and oranges. Just heavenly. “The mix of cashmere, silk, velvet and fur adds a cosy element to the scheme.” Can you describe the property? Situated in St Moritz, this striking Norman Foster-designed penthouse extension to an older stone building was originally two apartments. My clients amalgamated it into one and most of the internal walls were removed. The main living space is an exaggerated L shape and consists of a television area centred around the fireplace, a more formal sitting area and a large dining space featuring a five-metre-long table. “I try to position plants where low sun in the morning and evening highlights the flowers and seedheads to give them a magical, theatrical quality.” What was your brief for this garden? My clients live in the same village as me near Bruges in Belgium. After buying two fields at the back of their property, they asked me to extend their garden using a naturalistic style similar to that of my own garden, which they had seen on an open day. • I like window treatments that create an informal, relaxed feel. Instead of complicated or flamboyant styles, I prefer something simple and clean-looking made from high-quality fabrics, often with hand-tied curtain headings. • Curtains in plain silks or linens, carefully made and well finished, allow the beauty of the fabric and the architecture of the room to shine. • A slim gunmetal-coloured pole with natural silk curtains can make a space feel very luxurious.
