Working with the team on this, our French issue, has reawakened my desire to return, starting from the image of Saint-Émilion’s market square on page 15 through to the delicious, authentic recipes on page 113. In particular, the places listed in our feature on the real France on page 46 have had me desperately trying to squeeze in the time for a short break in autumn. It was an absolute pleasure choosing the homes to be included in the magazine with Arabella, our houses and gardens editor. Can you tell us a bit about your backgrounds? We are both product designers. After studying at Les Ateliers design school in Paris and the Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, we started collaborating in 2004. We’ve worked together on many retail projects and private apartments, as well as items as diverse as packaging for the pastry chef Pierre Hermé to a wood burner for French brand Richard Le Droff. Designer Jean-Louis Deniot counts his country home near Chantilly as his first love. A picture-postcard château in a region famed for the beauty of its countryside, it was not so much the setting that first tempted Jean-Louis to Chantilly, but its proximity to Paris, where his o∞ce is based. Even as his portfolio of homes has grown over the years to include residences in Paris, Spain, Tangier and California, the château still holds a special place in his affections, particularly as it is a retreat he uses regularly. “It’s a very important place and means the most to me out of all my houses,” says Jean-Louis. “It represents stability and is where I feel the most grounded. Can you describe the project? This is the main living area of a newly built villa in the grounds of the Marbella Club Hotel in Spain. Named El Cortijo, meaning the farmhouse, the villa draws inspiration from the architectural style of traditional Andalusian farmhouses. We specified details, such as the carved wooden ceiling, rustic fireplace and handmade terracotta tiles, in keeping with the farmhouse tradition. What effect did you want to achieve? The interiors needed to reflect the local rural style, but with a chic, contemporary feel. Here, the soft palette of mainly neutral shades serves as a calming contrast to the hot climate and we’ve used several textures – seagrass, rattan and timber – in a nod to the nearby beach. Can you describe the project? This is the main bathroom in my apartment in South Kensington. The building is a Grade-II-listed Gothic-style property and I carefully reinstated many of its original details, including the cornicing. My husband and my builder questioned my decision to assign half the main suite to a bathroom, as they felt the bedroom should be bigger, but I reasoned that we spend a great deal of time in the bathroom – dressing, pampering and splashing about with the children. I was keen to create a calming, sophisticated feel; a glamorous boudoir-style scheme where I could indulge in quiet me-time, as well as enjoy bath time with our young children. The largest single piece in front of you at the table is usually the plate, so is the best starting point when deciding how to build up the setting. Choose a colour that contrasts with or matches the rest of the scheme to set the tone. Pattern can be overbearing if in constant repetition, so we advise clients to mix dinner services for a fresh look for each course. How would you describe your Instagram account? When we started we thought there were too many Instagram accounts showing the Eiffel Tower, macarons, sunsets and pastel perfection. We wanted to share a more unpretentious side of the city: a picture of daily life and the people living here. Admittedly, it’s still on the pretty side – this is Instagram after all. I’m a great believer that a table should not be too large for the number of guests. For entertaining, opt for an oval or slim rectangular design; it’s essential that guests can talk to each other easily. Choosing pieces that can multi-task is key. In dining rooms that open onto living spaces, use a pair of comfortable armchairs as seating for guests. These can double as easy chairs for reading and watching television on nights off. Well positioned background lighting, such as wall lights or floor lamps, can be used to give the impression of candlelight. This is a great way to add atmosphere for evening dinner parties. How would you describe your style? Chic and colourful. It is not very formal; I like to blend vintage inspirations with contemporary pieces. For me, typical Parisian style can be best described as a mix of casual and elegant. Artwork and photographs are very important to me and I like to hang pictures in frames of different sizes to make a space feel more personal. Veronique Piedeleu took up the reins of chic Parisian homewares brand Caravane in 2011. The artistic director travels the globe unearthing fabrics, furniture and handcrafted pieces. In 2014, the brand crossed the Channel, opening its first London shop in Marylebone’s creative design enclave. “I inherited my eye for design from my grandmother. That was the line of thinking for Johanne and Ian Balfour as they worked on the design for their Johannesburg home, which they have now been living in for just over a year. There is a rarefied strip of the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, which is Australia’s answer to the Hamptons. Large houses dominate the area and the gardens are a mixture of country and seaside style. The garden I created for Peter and Maria Wallington is situated slightly inland, where sandy soil, the lowness of the surrounding tea tree forests and the heavily vegetated sand dunes have led to the development of a very particular planting style. The local gardens are filled with plants that can tolerate salt winds and sandy soils – olive, tea tree, lavender, agapanthus, hydrangea and cypress – and large lawns traditionally dominate. Can you tell us about the project? This is the terrace of a large villa in the south of France. We reworked the outdoor spaces in order to maximise the views, extending the pool with a lovely sweep so it appears to blend with the sea; the iridescent mosaic tiles were carefully sourced to match the sparkling, deep-blue hue. Glass balustrades ensure the vista isn’t interrupted, while providing a wind break. How were the various seating areas designed?
