Can you tell us how you got into your field? At university I studied product design, but by the time I graduated, it no longer excited me to design things that I could never imagine using. Searching for inspiration, I headed to the local marina, where I became a boat-builder. I loved the fact that I could see the contribution I had made at the end of the day but I realised the only way I could progress was to become a laminator and use lots of harsh chemicals. Instead, I decided to re-train at Robinson House Studio as a furniture maker and swapped noisy power tools for delicate hand tools. One of the most renewable and sustainable natural fibres for interior and fashion textiles is grown in the UK. Can you tell us about the property? The house is a substantial Victorian semi-detached villa next to Wandsworth Common in south-west London. The project was to redesign a rather tired en-suite bathroom leading off the main bedroom at the front of the property. It’s generous size, with dimensions of 4x3.5m, allowed us to be flexible with the layout. Did the owners give you a detailed brief? It always takes a few meetings to pinpoint a client’s interior style and draw up a wish list for a scheme, but it was a joy to work on a project with owners who were so open-minded about our ideas. What are the key considerations when designing a lighting scheme? It depends on your particular needs, but there are a few rules of thumb. Firstly, a light source must never be too bright if there’s no shade, and always avoid fluorescent tubes. Try to use your lamp as an indirect light source, complementing interiors and objects on display. “There is a fantastic German word that my late grandmother used to describe a person or a place that feels comforting and cosy, ‘gemütlich’. That is how I wanted this house to feel,” says Joanna Sharron, who lives in this five-bedroom Victorian terraced house in west London with her husband and their two daughters. Nestled at the end of a narrow lane in Shropshire is one of Britain’s most successful horticultural businesses, David Austin Roses. The gardens and nursery have been here for 48 years, and every summer hundreds of blooms burst into life, sharing their magnificent fragrance and colours of cream to apricot, yellow to deep red. David Austin, or Mr A, as employees affectionately call him, lives next door and, even in his nineties, is still very hands on with keeping the place in order. For the past eight years, he has been redesigning his private garden. “My wife, Pat, used to look after it, but when she passed away, I took it on,” he says. Can you describe the project? This large dining-living room is part of a larger open-plan space on the first floor of a 1930s three-storey detached house in London, which was being completely renovated. My clients wanted to create a beautiful family home to share with their three young children, with this a relaxed area for entertaining. However, they had opposing ideas of how to achieve this. One wanted a bright, white, open-plan design, while the other preferred a more intimate, cosy feel. How did you deal with the challenge? The architect reconfigured the room so that it now features huge doors, which slide into side pockets.
