This month, our muse is France and we’ve crossed the Channel for inspiration of all kinds, from design to cuisine. Not many people living on their own, and in their eighth decade, would take on the renovation of a run-down property situated on an island that can only be reached by boat. For Irène Rouvillois, however, such a project gave her the opportunity to build a home in a place that she fell in love with as a child. Irène first came to Île-aux-Moines, a small cross-shaped island in the Gulf of Morbihan, southern Brittany, when her Parisian parents bought a thatched cottage as a holiday home. “Every year we would come for the month of August,” recalls Irène. “That is when I discovered how magnificent it is here. SETTING THE SCENE When creating your outdoor entertaining scheme, why not take the colours of the surroundings as your starting point? In the case of this Provençal terrace overlooking a glorious vista, we needed to do little more than echo the soft olive greens of the fields and hills beyond. First, we strung pretty white enamel outdoor lights between the tree branches, then threw a generous cloth in palest grey over the dining table, teamed with napkins bordered in a bold forest green. For the table setting, layer up a mix of classic-style glassware and cutlery, unfussy contemporary pieces and hand-thrown dishes – there’s no need to worry about everything matching. Can you describe the space? When I first visited this old farmhouse in rural Sussex, the owners were in the middle of renovations. The internal walls had been ripped out upstairs, leaving lots of beautiful beams exposed, and one of my first steps was to decide where the bathroom walls would be positioned. The clients were really easy-going and open to ideas, which made this a really nice project to work on. What was your brief? The man of the house has his own bathroom, which is dark and moody, but this room was going to be for his wife. FINE LINES A door frame becomes more of a decorative feature with the addition of a surrounding border. If painting architraves a dark shade, extend them by a few inches on to the wall to distort proportions and bring a sense of grandeur. No summer trip to France is complete without a glimpse of a flight of stone steps, terrace wall or village boundary lined by pots full to overflowing with red pelargoniums. These plants, once the staple of Victorian bedding schemes, now tend to be used less formally, filling gaps in herbaceous borders or in containers and hanging baskets. Pelargoniums come in many varieties, with flowers big and small, from pure white through to pink, orange, bright red and deep purple. Although belonging to the same family as their hardy cousin the geranium, they are grown differently. Can you describe the space? The apartment, which is in a converted factory overlooking Regent’s Canal, has sliding glazed doors that open on to a balcony. The owners, fashion photographer Silvia Olsen and her husband, Michael Jedraszak, reworked the layout to bring the kitchen forward – closer to the views – adding a new cloakroom and creating a more open-plan living space. Can you describe the space for us? This is part of a super-large living room in my home, an Oxfordshire coach house built of Cotswold stone. Of everything we buy for our home, it is perhaps furniture that most repays investment in quality, far outliving high-end electrical appliances, fine carpets and luxury textiles. One indicator of excellence is the furniture Design Guild Mark (DGM), an annual award presented by the Worshipful Furniture Makers’ Company to recognise the best work in “volume production” from British designers, taking into consideration excellence in design, the use of materials, manufacture and function. Would you call yourself a potter? I don’t consider myself to be a potter and have had very little formal training, but I do seem to have an affiliation to ceramics and a number of my projects have resulted in some form of ceramic design. Originally, I completed an art foundation at Leeds College of Art, then went on to study 3D design at Bath School of Art & Design. Sunk into a steep slope above the hilltop enclave of Châteauneuf in the south of France, there is an intriguing upside-down house almost hidden by magnificent banks of Mediterranean flora. One might think this is a natural landscape, but it is in fact only a few years old, created from scratch by its owner Thomas Jones. Thomas, a yacht captain, saw the picturesque plot for sale 12 years ago and thought it was the perfect spot for him, his wife and three children. “It was fantastic; one of the locals had a vineyard there, which had been in his family for generations,” he explains. Can you describe the space? This guest bedroom in a beach house in the Hamptons forms part of a suite that includes a dressing area, bathroom and children’s bedroom. Because it is designed to accommodate a family, it was important to carve out a sitting area within the bedroom to provide visitors with some private space. What is the key to a well-designed bedroom? Every space we design is practical and we choose pieces that won’t hinder movement around the room. • There is a strong move away from whites and greys that give homes a linear, hard-edged architectural look. The mood is now much more tender and delicate, it’s about wanting home to be our sanctuary.
