Annick, can you tell us a bit about your background? I studied at the Beaux-Arts in my hometown of Marseille then, in 1985, I set up my own atelier, designing and making children’s clothes. I called the company Honoré, as I thought it was a lovely name for a child. I later added a collection for women, but I’ve always had a passion for interiors so a few years on I began to branch out into homewares, starting with a range of linens. How did this develop? When mother and daughter duo Marjorie Taylor and Kendall Smith Franchini set up The Cook’s Atelier in Beaune, an historic walled town in the heart of Burgundy, it was the realisation of a long-held dream. Visiting Stéphane Chassine’s garden on the southern banks of the River Loire is, in modern parlance, an immersive experience. Follow the grassy paths that wind through the Rose Cloister, walk beneath the pergolas, arbours and tunnels that lead through the garden, sit on the rustic benches and, throughout, and you will be surrounded by more than 500 varieties of rose. They festoon the trees, cascade from walls and enshroud their supports, taking on a near-wild appearance and enveloping you with their delicious scent. In 1999, when Stéphane and his wife, Aline, bought their farmhouse, just a field away from the south bank of the river at Meung-sur-Loire, the buildings were derelict and there was no garden, just a flat, six-hectare field with a few mature walnut and acacia trees. What type of property is this? It’s a single-fronted townhouse in Chelsea. We built a two-storey closet wing at the rear, taking two bedrooms to four, and then added a glass extension on the ground floor to open up the previously tiny kitchen. How did you get involved? I’ve known the clients for years. They work in property but this is their family home, shared with their two teenagers and two dogs. Although they don’t renovate with the intention of selling, they usually can’t help seeking out the next challenge. What influenced the kitchen’s layout? The clients cook a lot, so they requested the biggest appliances the space would allow. I follow the ‘working triangle’ principle – to chop, wash and cook without excessive travel. Can you describe the project? This home in Atlanta, Georgia, is in a relatively urban setting, but it sits back from the road against a wooded hillside, giving it a pastoral feel and privacy on all sides. The rooms were originally designed with dark panelled walls and floor finishes, but the new owners wanted a much lighter palette. To this end, the flooring here was replaced with limed oak and the panelling painted to give the whole interior a facelift. What was the main influence for the scheme? The room is filled with light all day long, so the design was all about making the most of this, with a luminous and open feel. What did the garden look like when you bought the land? This area was a granite quarry for many years and it was planted with conifers after the Second World War so, when Thierry moved here in the 1980s, the property was covered with spruce trees. He cleared these to make a small garden around a wooden shack, which later became his home. When we moved in together in the 1990s, we gradually bought more parcels of land, removing more than 3,000 trees in all, and bringing in lorry-loads of topsoil. • When it comes to paintings, prints or photographs, I like to hang a lot on a wall. A good approach is to zone the pictures. Floor-to-ceiling black-and-white prints can look very smart in a corridor, for example. Groups of family photographs hung together in a smaller room work well, too, and is preferable to them being scattered on surfaces. I don’t like the idea of close-hanging modern paintings, though – you don’t want a room to end up looking like the railings of Hyde Park on a Sunday. • Before hanging, arrange the pictures on the floor. With great property comes great responsibility. ‘It’s true; if you think too much about this kind of house, you would never buy it,’ muses interior designer Pierre Yovanovitch. ‘Although I’m very glad I did.’ The property in question is an estate formed of a rather splendid 17th-century château in Provence, a farmhouse (a 19th-century addition) and 700 acres of woodland and farmland. Pierre, who is based in Paris, was not actually looking for another home when he spotted the château in a property magazine. His interest, however, was piqued and he succumbed. STEPS AND SLOPES Using the hillsides of southern France as your template, transform a dry, sloping garden with colour and texture. Can you describe the history of this building? This stunning property, on the Spanish Costa Brava, started life as two 16th-century signal towers built to protect the nearby Castle of Calonge from pirate invasions. The main residence between the two towers was added in the 17th century and, within sight of the beach, it is now a weekend escape for my clients who have three children. How did you alter the layout? The building is of historic importance so we couldn’t touch the towers, but we removed internal walls and a second staircase to turn the first floor into an open-plan bedroom, bathroom and dressing space. WHICH MATTING IS BEST FOR STAIRS? We are moving to an old house and I’d like to fit matting on the stairs to link with the wooden floors in the hall and on the landing. Combining her passions for sustainability and originality, designer Ariane Prin launched her first homewares collection, Rust, in 2015. Made entirely by hand using waste metal particles, each piece is unique in colour, texture and shape. “My collection came about thanks to a bag of key dust that a locksmith gave me one day. I love how a material that is useless to one person can be of much greater value to someone else, and the starting point of a new project; I think we need to make more of these design connections. Time-worn wood furniture and handcrafted vessels make charming partners for the open-weave pendant light, designed to cast playful shadows to atmospheric effect. Walking through the gates that lead to Carine Reckinger’s property on the Côte d’Azur, the sight that greets you is enough to make you feel as if you have taken a step back in time. Here, hidden from view and set against a backdrop of rugged mountains, Carine has, as she describes it, ‘tried to recreate Provence as it was seventy or a hundred years ago’. Accordingly, everything is pared back, there is no grand drive, just a gravel track, and there are no lawns, only meadows that extend along the ridge to the woodland. For the past 40 years, Carine has worked with the topography and existing vegetation of her land. ‘Any ideas of planting delphiniums and other common garden flowers were quickly abandoned in favour of the robust…

Which Mediterranean plants would you recommend for a dry garden in Britain? Cistus (rock rose) is one of my favourites. These evergreens will grow happily in a sunny, sheltered spot and produce large, delicate flowers in shades of pink and white. I also use phlomis, which has silvery leaves and unusual hooded flowers followed by architectural seedheads, and teucrium, a drought-tolerant genus that includes plants with a range of flower colours. How would you combine the plants in a border? Choose an evergreen shrub, such as Pistacia lentiscus (mastic tree), and buy enough plants to cover about half of the total area. Space them out evenly on the bed and add a combination of cistus, phlomis and teucrium between. Fill the remaining gaps with a grass, such as Carex remota.…

Can you describe the project? This is the main bedroom in a late-19th-century building that lies at the heart of Chelsea in London. The building is rather quirky: it was once a dog kennels and then a publishing house and, for 15 years, it was the offices for our interior design company Taylor Howes along with our diffusion branch th2Designs.
