I spent yesterday judging our annual Fabric Awards, where we honour the best new collections. It was an inspiring day and a chance to see hundreds of gorgeous designs, but the true privilege was spending time with the design royalty we had on this year’s panel: colour and pattern queen Kit Kemp, expert in serene sophistication Emma Sims-Hilditch, brilliant design author and long-standing H&G friend Celia Rufey and our effortlessly stylish interiors editor Emma Thomas. These tastemasters all brought something unique to the table, and we hotly debated each category to whittle it down to the winner and highly commended list. Tell us about your background Drawing was my first love, but my parents weren’t keen on me going to art school so I went to university in Edinburgh to study social anthropology. Martin: Kit has a strong back catalogue of much-loved design from her work in hotels ranging from Ham Yard in London to The Whitby in New York. We have tried to bottle that and offer the critical building blocks of her style, enabling people to bring home the romance and magic of her hotels. Kate Lorentz’s elegant Cape Town family home owes its success to serendipity as much as her intuitive sense of style. The self-confessed interiors aficionado was guided by instinct as she skilfully curated the interior of her home, rebuilt in 2013. ‘There was no grand idea, no intention as such, just a desire to create an unfussy indoor-outdoor home filled with character,’ recalls Kate modestly, which make her accomplishments all the more remarkable. Good lighting can transform a room. It can make a small space seem larger or a vast room more intimate, help create mood, enhance features and define zones. Such is its versatility, it is worth planning the lighting at the beginning of a project. Start by thinking about how the room is to be used. Generally, a scheme should include a mix of task lighting, such as reading lights and under cabinet lights, plus general background lighting and accent lighting. General lighting could come from uplights on top of cupboards, recessed downlights in the ceiling and perhaps some lamps. What tips do you have for planting trees in a paved courtyard? Plant small trees with year-round interest in large containers that hold plenty of compost and water to sustain them, and install a watering system to prevent them from drying out. Set out smaller pots around the trees and fill with ferns and grasses such as Hakonechloa macra (Japanese forest grass) and carex, to soften the hard surfaces and maximise interest. How would you bring movement into the garden? Introducing still or moving water into a small woodland has a magical impact, animating the space while reflecting the light and tree canopies. What did this garden look like before your new design? The garden was mostly laid to lawn, with an outdoor swimming pool and mature trees. The property was the former kitchen garden of a larger house, and it is surrounded by an old listed brick wall, with a single-storey house in the centre. The owners had commissioned architect Dan Brill to reconfigure the house, and the area we can see here is the bedroom wing, which looks out on to the swimming pool; the kitchen and dining areas are behind it in the middle of the house, while a garage, utility room and sitting room make up the west wing. An innovative portfolio of six British decor brands, brought together under one name last summer under the helm of creative director Claire Vallis, Style Library has a new showroom in Design Centre Chelsea Harbour and an inspirational website, stylelibrary.com. Perhaps the best known brands in Style Library’s portfolio are Sanderson and Morris & Co. The other labels are Harlequin, Zoffany, Scion and Anthology. It’s an impressive list, but there is just one creative director: Claire Vallis. Marijke van Nunen’s home in the Netherlands is the perfect showcase for the beautiful artisanal products she sources for her interiors company, which distributes fabrics, accessories and furniture to the design world. ‘When customers of my firm visit from abroad, they stay here and get to see many of the pieces I sell in a real setting,’ says Marijke. Can you give us a brief project outline? This Nottinghamshire home was built in the Eighties in a grand, mock-Georgian style, and the bathroom was decorated similarly but had become rather tired over time. Can you tell us about the property? This apartment in Ealing in Outer London was built by Fusion Residential – a forward-thinking developer specialising in small-scale but luxurious projects. It is on the ground floor, so benefits from garden access. The layout of the living area subscribes to the latest ‘broken plan’ trend. It can be completely open-plan, which is great for socialising, but double pocket doors allow the living/dining area to be shut off to create more intimate spaces.
