I am writing this having just visited Petersham Nurseries in Covent Garden. I’m a little late to the party with this as the florist, delicatessen and shop opened in July last year and the two restaurants, bar and courtyard followed in April. Featuring lavish floral installations, dramatic lighting and distressed mirrors and statement artwork, the setting is perfection. Following my visit, as I cast fresh eyes on our December issue’s decorating content, it would be fair to say that much of it chimes with the ‘Petersham look’. Namely, creative ways with foliage, burnished metallics and just the right amount of twinkle. We worked with the best florists to bring you these ideas. How would you describe your Instagram account? It’s my personal, but not private, digital sketchbook that reflects my Scandinavian way of life and my palette of life. Wreaths don’t have to be symmetrical. Play around with different-shaped bases, or create unusual asymmetrical designs by arranging foliage, berries and flowers over two-thirds of a circular base. The hall is the first area of your home that your visitors see, so dress it with an impressive wreath. Cover a console table for understated grandeur and set the scene by framing artwork (here made from wallpaper panels) with generous greenery swags. Transform your hallway by layering evergreen foliage and fresh flowers along staircases and on tables. Accessorise with silver baubles, twinkling lights and smart ribbon. Georgina Guy and her husband John had been thinking of swapping their lovely but narrow home for a more spacious, family-orientated environment when a chance call from a local estate agent triggered a fast and reactive chain of events. A quick initial viewing of a Victorian house in Parsons Green, London, led to an immediate offer to buy and a request to Georgina’s sister, interior designer Lucinda Sanford, for her help to create a dream home for the couple and their son Charlie, aged eight. Instead of following the London norm for open-plan living, Georgina and John were keen to rework a traditional layout and design bespoke spaces to meet their changing needs. When Julie and Mark Coley began work on their garden at The Old Rectory on the Suffolk/Cambridge border in 1972 there was nothing on the plot except a few inherited yew trees. ‘You could see right across the fields and the valley to the southeast,’ says Julie. ‘We had two acres of our own and a much larger borrowed landscape that included grazing sheep,’ she says. The couple created borders and marked out the areas of the garden bit by bit. What was the owners’ brief? Understated, comfortable and relaxed were the buzzwords during the planning discussions for this kitchen-diner in a 10-bedroom Grade II-listed property. Essentially, they wanted the space reconfigured to provide a more informal room – by comparison with the rest of the grand property. It also had to be more dog-friendly. The design was to be in keeping with a country house setting, but with modern functionality. How did you plan the layout? Several walls had been removed from these former staff kitchens and estate offices to create the L-shaped kitchen-diner you see now. WHAT’S THE BEST FINISH FOR A WOOD WORKTOP? We’ve inherited a varnished pine kitchen worktop that I’m going to strip as the varnish is flaking. Which finish is easy to apply and hardwearing, especially in the area around the sink? NB, London N3. Resplendent in its setting on top of a hill in the bucolic Wiltshire countryside, Sasha and John Kennedy’s Georgian country villa commands magnificent views. The illustrious house has gone through several incarnations – it was a hospital during the Second World War and, at one time, was even divided up into flats. Prior to Sasha and John buying it, the property had become a family home again, with a substantial renovation in the Sixties that featured interior decoration by John Fowler. Passing through the rooms of Maria and Leo Kessels’ home, it’s hard to believe that it was built only six years ago. The smell of wood and stone lightly scents the air, along with pine and eucalyptus permeating from the seasonal decorations. Built specifically for their retirement, the house stands on one of Leo’s family’s old fruit plantations deep in rural Holland. COFFEE AND WALNUT TRUFFLES Makes approx 30 Some chocolate truffles are sweet and others – like these – are intensely rich and luxurious! 1½ tbsp instant coffee granules 180ml double cream 200g plain chocolate, finely chopped 20g unsalted butter 100g walnuts, roughly ground (or finely chopped) • Place the coffee and cream in a small pan and heat gently, stirring, until the cream just comes to the boil. Removing from the heat, add the chocolate and butter and stir until melted and smooth. • I love the juxtaposition of the hard exterior of metallics combined with the glowing warmth that they create in the home.
