We’ve named October ‘the design issue’. I wanted to champion the talents that appear in its pages. To create this month’s edit, we have collaborated with some of today’s most exciting names. The houses include retail guru Chrissie Rucker’s serene London home by Rose Uniacke (page 32), a city penthouse by Paolo Moschino and artist John Derian’s fabulously moody NYC apartment. And in the back section, we further our celebration of high style by asking seven industry leaders to share the secrets behind a space that they have created (page 151). Q Can you tell us a little bit about your background? I was making paintings from a young age, but originally planned to study architecture. After school I worked for an architectural practice, drafting plans, which was a skill I learned from my mum who was also an architect. Working there put me off a bit as it seemed as though there was zero creativity, which isn’t true but it bored me stiff. So I enrolled on an art course instead. For seasoned interior designer Kate Walker, renovating her own home was a timely reminder that simplicity and restraint often produce the most uplifting results. When she first saw her Eighties bungalow in Mount Martha, a seaside suburb an hour southeast from Melbourne, the temptation was to virtually tear down the yellow brick-veneered ‘ugly duckling’ and start again. CHEMIST John Farrow and engineer Richard Ball founded a paint company in 1946 based on their shared interest in formulating paint from the finest ingredients. The product was excellent but its influence seldom strayed beyond Dorset. The defining era began in 1990 when Tom Helme, working as a restorative painter for The National Trust, was asked to create a palette of paint colours. He cast around for a source for the quality of paint he needed and discovered Farrow & Ball. Twenty years ago, New York’s Bowery District was considered so grungy that a character in a US sitcom quipped the only reason she would go there was to visit John Derian’s shop. Having anchored himself to this vibrant corner of the East Village, the area has since evolved around him into a much safer and more pleasant neighbourhood. ‘When I opened my first store in 1995, the Bowery was considered a little bit sketchy with a bad reputation. Gradually that changed, especially when The Bowery Hotel opened. Its proprietors are customers of my shop,’ John reveals. Better together is definitely true when it comes to interior designer Wendi Wolf Lewitt’s west London home. Two adjacent mews houses, combined but never properly integrated, came on the market five years ago, and proved irresistible for Wendi and her husband Paul. ‘We’ve lived in the area for years and we didn’t even realise the mews existed – the property is in a quiet position at the end of a cul-de-sac,’ explains Wendi. ‘We love the neighbourhood’s buzzy atmosphere, so the house was too good an opportunity to miss. “WE LOVE THE SENSE OF PRIVACY AND CALM IN THIS GARDEN, WHICH WRAPS AROUND US AND IS HIDDEN FROM THE WORLD” It’s impossible to imagine that this elegant garden, cushioned in lush green planting, occupies the leanest of plots – a triangle between two streets in west London. The garden ‘frames’ the 19th-century Arts and Crafts property, pinned off-centre, creating a triangular wedge. Clean-cut walkways, among verdant planting, extend along each of the triangle’s vertices, irresistibly tempting exploration and wanderings. ROOM WITH A VIEW Generous curtains with tiebacks and window seats are classic trademarks of English country-house style. To recreate this but maintain a relaxed, informal finish, take inspiration from the Wiltshire bedroom of the decorator Emily Todhunter, co-founder of Todhunter Earle. She has chosen curtains that are self-lined in organic linen, meaning that they fall naturally rather than being stiffened by lining fabric. Q Tell us a little bit about your backgrounds? Bridget: I grew up in New Zealand and trained as a lawyer before working in magazines and design in New York for a few years. But when my husband and I moved to London when our children were small, I decided to follow my heart and retrain in garden design and horticulture. When viewed from the outside, this three-bedroom apartment near the Thames in London is all glass and concrete, and gives the impression of being a beacon of modernity. SENSE OF ADVENTURE Beata Heuman reveals how her animated style brings energy to her own Victorian sitting room 1 . TO PELMET OR NOT Pelmets developed a bit of a fusty reputation but they can provide a fun way to frame a window, believes interior designer Beata Heuman. When selecting a colour for your pelmet, don’t be afraid to pick a contrasting shade that stands out against the palette of the rest of the room: a more contemporary, vibrant fabric can bring this detail into a modern context. ‘I’m not a fan of tassels or frilly finishes but a contrasting hem in a grosgrain ribbon is another option to finish the pelmet in an interesting way,’ adds Beata.
