I am delighted to be the first guest editor of Homes & Gardens in its 101-year history, as I have always loved its enthusiasm to tackle all aspects of design, in both a practical and an aesthetically pleasing way. It is wide-ranging and informative. Being best known for my love of colour and craft, I am taking this chance to highlight some of the many artisans we admire in Meet the Makers on page 15. They make us realise it is never too late to change course in life, with rewards and satisfaction to reap in the process. NIAMH BARRY After graduating from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Niamh Barry set up her design practice in the city. Using a combination of ancient bronze metalwork techniques, alongside technology such as LEDs to ‘draw’ with light, Niamh creates unique light sculptures for both private and public projects, such as Vessel Scape, a 10m-long sculpture at Dublin’s Central Bank of Ireland. Her work explores the fluidity of human form as well as patterns created by nature; Ireland’s landscape is a huge inspiration. LUMA ARLES The Luma Foundation is an arts organisation that works across multiple contemporary disciplines. Coming this year is the staggered opening of an ambitious cultural park, set to be crowned with a reflective aluminium tower by Frank Gehry. AMPHITHEATRE The magnificent Roman amphitheatre dates to around 90AD, and would once have entertained the populace with chariot racing and gladiator fights. Owning a dog is wonderful. Every morning, regardless of the weather, I’m drawn into my nearby park in southeast London for walkies, allowing me to observe the daily change on my doorstep. We’ve had our terrier Willow for four years now, so I have at least three years of observations and mental notes of the conditions of trees and locations of patches of wildflowers each season. It’s not a nature reserve, but passing the same points each day reveal ordinary but beautiful things like sparrow habits or wildflower multiplication. Come June, it has knee-high grass with an abundance of grass-tolerant wildflowers (too often referred to as ‘weeds’). Grass still struggles in patches scorched by the heatwave in 2018, making them favourable for native flora intolerant of hardy park grass. I’m…

Cross the bridge to the Isle of Sheppey on the Kent coast and drive through flat marshland to Sheerness. Here in this town of cranes, ships and faded seaside holiday memories are the remnants of the old Royal Navy Dockyard, including a terrace of Georgian houses built during the Napoleonic Wars. The unique character of this place – an exciting clash of historical and industrial – attracted architect Rupert Wheeler and others from the Spitalfields Trust, a building conservation charity. They rescued the terrace from a developer in 2011, and Rupert chose the middle house as his weekend home, doing it up over a number of years. Q Tell us about you. Growing up on a farm in Worcestershire, with cows and sheep and apple orchards, I’ve always felt a deep connection to the natural world. ROASTED COD WITH A CORIANDER CRUST SERVES 4 60 ml olive oil 4 garlic cloves, crushed 50g coriander, finely chopped ¾tsp ground cardamom ¾tsp ground cumin ½tsp paprika ¾tsp ground turmeric ½tsp chilli flakes 4 large cod loins, skin on 4 large fresh bay leaves 2 lemons Preheat the oven to 230C/Gas 8. You’ll find a myriad of amazing interiors at Bujera Fort hotel in Udaipur and they all reflect the eclectic style of its interior-designer owner Richard Hanlon – and he wouldn’t have it any other way. ‘I hate rooms that look like a hotel,’ he says. ‘This is very much our home. And, when you’re here, this is your home.’ Richard and his friend Trish McFarlane set off second-home hunting in India some 13 years ago, a plan that gradually morphed into building an entire hotel from scratch. THE UNNATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM by Viktor Wynd (£35, Prestel Publishing Ltd) If you’ve ever stepped foot inside Viktor Wynd’s Museum of Curiosities in east London, then you may have an idea of what’s in store for Wynd’s new book, The Unnatural History Museum.
