The grow-your-own movement is now bigger than ever, and living seasonally, sustainably and locally has become a true passion for many. With this in mind, we commissioned two of our best-trusted contributors, food stylist and writer Alice Hart and photographer Emma Lee, to create our From Garden to Table story – a fabulous summer lunch made from vegetables commonly grown in British gardens. Although produced during lockdown and with strict social-distancing guidelines, it sings of dreamy barefoot days in the sunshine with family. Another movement accelerated by months of isolation is craft, as this period has reinforced the importance of creativity. So we came up with our own take on ‘how-to’ pages. Our work has become a way of life,’ says the artist Max Bainbridge, one half of the London-based design practice Forest + Found. Set up with the mission to work with foraged materials, he founded the company in 2014 with fellow artist Abigail Booth. It was, she says, born from the need ‘to get hold of materials that were easily available, either free or low cost.’ Today, however, it forms the backbone of their artistic raison d’être. AMBROSIAL APRICOTS SERVES 6 250ml mild runny honey 120ml water 2 lemons 12 apricots, halved and pitted 40g pistachios, coarsely chopped ■ Combine the honey and water in a saucepan and set over a medium heat. Pare off the zest of 1 lemon in thick strips, add to the pan, then squeeze in the juice of both lemons. Bring to the boil and, when the syrup begins to bubble, reduce the heat. ■ Add the apricot halves and poach for 5-6 minutes until soft (you may need to cook them in batches). Walking off a charming cobbled mews in London into the home of the Mehtas family, you are confronted with a beautiful melding of modern eclecticism and classic country-house styling. When Jessica Buckley was brought in to create a look for this London family home, she was greeted by wall-to-wall white emulsion and the effect ‘was rather chilly’. In marked contrast, Jessica decided to use colour and pattern to introduce personality. ‘I wanted to make this a home that the owners genuinely look forward to returning to at the end of the day – a place that feels warm, interesting and inviting,’ she says. My birthday is in September, so I feel a particular fondness for this month. My dad was a farmer when I was born in the middle of harvest – he rushed from the fields to the hospital to be with my mum and eventually me, then back to the fields the next day, so the story goes. I’m sure the tale of dusty fathers-to-be dashing to hospital in late summer, still in their overalls, is familiar in agricultural communities around the world. Harvest has its festival in September, mostly, coinciding with harvest moon, which is the full moon closest to the autumn equinox. Q Can you tell us a little bit about your background? I discovered the amazing world of passementerie – the art of making elaborate trimmings such as tassels and fringing using cord or thread – during my BA studies at Central Saint Martins. However, it was during my Masters in textiles at the Royal College of Art that I really began to develop ways to experiment and play with passementerie weaving techniques in order to create contemporary art pieces. HAVING grown up amongst woodland in northern Vermont, Jake Mosher has always been passionate about nature but it wasn’t until he left his job as an explosives engineer and moved to Montana that his desire to capture it came to the fore. Since then, he’s won numerous awards, including the People’s Choice Award from the Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest. Jake’s latest collection, Metamorphosis, is inspired by the patterns on butterfly and moth wings, observed through his camera at high magnification. How would you describe your style? COLOURS THAT CALM Everyone’s heard the line about blues and greens being the most calming colours, but it’s not the whole story.
