At the beginning of the pandemic, I asked a friend who is an MD at a global fashion brand what she thought its effect would be on what we wore. Of course, she predicted the swap from suits to sweats, but I was surprised by her insistence that we would all become bolder with colour. What the catwalk showcases quickly pervades interiors, and this was demonstrated in the beautifully colourful fabrics, paints and wallpapers seen at Chelsea Harbour and Paris Déco Off in the spring. Hence, this issue’s theme: colour confidence. Our starting point was an homage to Ukrainian-born artist Sonia Delaunay’s bold work – you can see our interpretation in Artistic Expression (p38). TABLE SETTINGS WITH FLAIR SUMMER is the perfect time to be creative with tables. Guests arriving at a well-prepared and welcoming table are instantly in the mood for good conversation and delicious food. There aren’t really any set rules for tablescaping, but if you match the unexpected you’ll find it much more fun. ■ More is more! I always advise using lots of accessories and layering table linens. I like patterned tablecloths for summer outdoor dining, as they create a more relaxed and pretty feel. Coloured wicker table mats add texture, while a large glass vase with fresh flowers makes a superb centrepiece. ■ Lighting is crucial. CURVE APPEAL ‘Painting a curve is soothing and satisfying to do and even more so to look at,’ says Dulux creative director Marianne Shillingford. Any combination of colours would work but these complementary shades of grey – Dulux’s Heritage Light French Grey and Heritage Country Sky – are especially serene. It isn’t difficult; as with all good paintwork, preparation is key. Marianne suggests: ‘To create the curve, you can either use chalk tied to the end of a piece of string or chalk along a length of bendy plastic electrical conduit. You never know when inspiration will strike – in the case of the owner of this London apartment, it was in a hotel in Athens. MARBLE Long appreciated for its classic beauty and mineral veining, natural marble varies from milky white rippled with grey veins to a myriad of other colours, including greens, reds, blacks, browns and even blues. Each slab is unique. ‘Marble is not only visually striking but also surprisingly tactile,’ explains Annie Ebenston, lead designer at Blakes London. There are many advantages to a low-intervention garden. If you can retrain your mind to see beauty in scruffiness, a high-ranking advantage is that your garden brings you pleasure with a lot less effort. Key to this is not having to sow or transplant new plants to give it life each spring, relying as I do on perennials, which regrow each year from their established rootstock, to bring the joy. In evolution, the majority of plants are perennial. So isn’t it strange that most of the plants humans depend on are grown as annuals – wheat, oats, rice, rape. GREEN is in general a calming and relaxing colour. Being the colour that represents nature, it’s one that makes us feel good and positive. ‘The poet and philosopher Goethe used to describe green as a useful colour, a good colour to have around,’ explains Francesca Wezel, founder of Francesca’s Paints. ‘Dark green is often used in traditional gentlemen’s clubs and libraries, goes well with wood and is a colour that stimulates concentration and deep thinking. BLINDS ‘We use fabric as much as we can in bathrooms, because it stops them from being cold, hard and echoey,’ says interior designer Emily Todhunter of Todhunter Earle. DECORATIVE HIERARCHY When using plasterwork in a traditional setting, consider the hierarchy of the rooms, says Simon Willcox of moulding specialist Locker & Riley. ‘The principal rooms tend to have the most detailing which could include ornate ceiling roses, cornicing and panelling.’ Cornicing hides the junction between the wall and the ceiling but more importantly helps to give character and definition, says Mike Fisher, founder of Studio Indigo. PLANT ROSES AMONG GRASSES AND PERENNIALS, with the plan to let them intermingle. Many roses are tough, resilient and wild at heart, and can offer longer seasonal interest, making them well-suited to modern, relaxed and relatively low-maintenance planting. SELECT COMPANION PLANTS to go alongside the roses that offer long structural presence or flowering interest, avoiding anything that is likely to die back in mid-summer or flop over in early autumn. Put into the mix, for instance a large floral fabric, a small floral, a stripe and a geometric textile or two.
