MARKING SOANE BRITAIN’S 25th anniversary this year is a new collection which draws on the richness of one of the world’s most ancient cultures: Egypt. Launched in September, Egyptomania takes in fabrics, furniture and lighting which reflects influences from thousands of years of Egyptian history. CHOOSING A PENDANT When it comes to size, a traditional rule of thumb says that the diameter of the chandelier or pendant light should be about half to two-thirds the length of the table – unless of course the table is round. But as with most rules, this approach can be put to the test by over-scaling to create a bigger wow impact. ‘Hang pendants low over the dining table to help create dramatic, intimate zones,’ says Charlie Bowles, director of Davey Lighting. ‘Pendants are also a great way of creating an impactful silhouette. No white walls’ was the key request when Stefani Stein was brought on board to transform the Los Angeles home of Orange is the New Black and The Handmaid’s Tale actress Samira Wiley and producer and director Lauren Morelli. The house, which Stefani describes as ‘a bit of a hodgepodge architecturally’, combines elements of Spanish Revival with 1970s Californian ranch style. The couple fell in love with it for its lovely sense of flow. ‘There is an openness from room to room, but it isn’t fully an open concept – the rooms and spaces are still defined,’ says Stefani. THE IMPORTANCE OF A NEUTRAL PALETTE I LOVE the calmness that you create when you have a neutral palette in a room. But this choice definitely doesn’t have to mean boring: you can create an interesting and exciting space by layering different tones, such as off-whites and beige, then introducing a range of caramels and even accents of black. ■ If I’ve got a calm colour scheme, then I focus on texture to bring different layers of interest. You have to think about how to introduce variations and things that feel different to the touch without just focusing on colour, and often that creates a more interesting scheme. ENDLESS OPTIONS There are a thousand ways to frame images, says artist and interior designer Lindi Reynolds. ‘Some need mounts, others don’t; some require glass, others nothing at all. Then there’s the form of the frame itself – they come in all shapes, sizes, colours and materials. There is a highly specialised art to picture framing; my key advice is to find framers in your area and build a relationship with them.’ This approach is backed up by Ed O’Donnell, co-founder of Angel O’Donnell. ‘A poor job could damage the art or rob it of the authority it deserves. When Jake Arnold was asked to design the interiors of this new-build waterfront home in Fort Lauderdale on the coast of Florida, he was given a rather lovely brief: ‘The owners wanted to feel as if they were on vacation all the time,’ he recounts. ‘As a hotelier, entertaining was also very important for my client. Greg Natale’s interiors have a sense of permanence and a style language that stands entirely apart from shifting tastes or trends. I’M ALWAYS trying to bring winks of joy and lightness into my interior schemes because we really need spaces that support us, especially with all the difficult things going on in the world right now.
