IT was in the mid-1990s that I took my first foray into the world of garden design, creating a scheme for a friend at her house in Hammersmith. When I graduated from the London College of Garden Design in 2014, it was a pivotal time in my career. I felt like I finally had the skills and knowledge I needed to work on a much more professional and detail-oriented level. PALERMO, SICILY Since it was first conceived in the 19th century, Villa Igiea has always been grand. The first time we came to stay was over 10 years ago. Perched above the marina in Palermo, the hotel was breathtaking, filled with gorgeous art deco details, sumptuous drawing rooms and Italianate gardens leading down to the water. But while the historic hotel was filled with charm and beauty, the years of neglect were obvious, and we couldn’t help wondering what it must have looked like in its heyday. Perhaps there is a link between the magic of the Itria Valley and the fairy-tale-like dry stone trulli huts with conical roofs that dot this area in the Italian region of Puglia. The fantasy of owning one of these structures has drawn dreamers worldwide to transform the once rural buildings into second homes. Over many holidays, this owner from Vicenza had been a guest at a friend’s trullo, never considering buying one for herself until one day, driving around Ostuni, she was lovestruck by this trullo for sale. ‘It was a five-coned trullo from the 16th century and it didn’t have much land, but the centenary fig tree and its location above a valley made it special,’ says the owner. THE Netherlands is well known for its strong connection to horticulture, both historically and in the present day. But in the 1970s, a tide of green counter-culture emerged against what was happening in the Dutch landscape. The Netherlands was becoming one of the most industrially farmed countries in Europe; with the increasing popularity of fertilisers and pesticides, there was growing concern that the country’s ecology would become sterilised by this explosion of big agriculture. Henk Gerritsen was part of a group of gardeners, growers and thinkers who were bouncing around ideas of what gardening was and could be. Seeing how much the natural landscape was becoming eroded, these thinkers proposed that gardening had to shift and become more closely aligned with the rhythms of the natural world once more. As…

NATURAL STONE ‘As a natural product, stone is great for creating a unique, characterful floor that is also highly durable and, if well sealed, easy to maintain,’ says Richard Moore, design director, Martin Moore. He recommends a stone with a smooth closed surface, which will be less likely to collect grime, or one with scattered shells and fossils across its surface, which won’t show the first dirty footprint. If possible, consider your choice of flooring as you assemble the palette of kitchen materials, and fit the floor before the cabinetry. ‘This provides a level base for your new kitchen and also means that, if you decide to move pieces of furniture at a later date, there is no requirement to change the floor,’ advises Richard. BLINDS ‘We like to use fabric in a bathroom as it softens the space and creates a warm feel among the usual hard surfaces,’ says Sophie Skinner, director, Grove Interiors. ‘A fabric blind is also an opportunity to bring some pattern into a scheme to create interest.’ Sophie advises ensuring that the bathroom has adequate ventilation to prevent build up of steam and moisture that might damage or stain the fabric, and to avoid hanging a blind too close to a shower for the same reason.
