LIGHT is one of the first things I consider when I walk into a space because it changes everything; it is fundamental to the personality of the room and how that impacts your mood. Textile designer Cathy Nordström has a plan. ‘I’m working on my fellow Swedes to encourage them to incorporate more colour and pattern,’ she says. ‘I think it’s going well; we are getting there slowly.’ If they need a little inspiration, then a tour of the Stockholm home she shares with her husband and three children should fire the imagination. Like her brand, it’s not typically Swedish in style, although Cathy’s ethos is focused around Swedish production, with her wallpapers and fabrics designed and produced in her native country by local craftspeople. ‘We actually use very little fabric in our homes across Scandinavia,’ says Cathy, ‘which is strange given that we like to be cosy.’ This ‘cosy’ is something Cathy has achieved in her own home, a 1925 four-bedroom property. SURFACE ATTRACTION Using marble as a single floor-to-ceiling surface in a bathroom is timelessly elegant – and spectacularly luxurious. The practice dates to the Romans, who decorated bathrooms and public rooms in marble. This bathroom by LA-based designer Jane Hallworth features in Barbara Sallick’s book The Ultimate Bath (Rizzoli, £45). The dramatically veined marble walls and floor create a theatrical element to the bathroom, which is then elevated further by the addition of a matching marble bath. There is a point at which it is possible to overdo the use of one material, however. FULL EXPOSURE An industrial-style stainless steel extractor calls for exposed ducting, especially in kitchens with soaring ceilings as seen in this airy loft apartment. And if your ceilings aren’t quite as sky-bound, exposing the ducting is an effective way to open up the space between rafters, creating more visible height. Avoid making the ductwork the sole focus, or it will steal all the attention from the kitchen below. Here, it blends into the rafters, so it is still visible and an attractive feature but doesn’t stand out or unbalance the scheme. LAYOUT The size of your bathroom, plus the location of windows, doors and sloping ceilings, may dictate the layout, including where there is sufficient head height for a shower, enough wall space to hang storage units and sanitaryware and whether there is room to include a bath. Less flexibility with the layout may make it better to focus energy on interesting colours and finishes instead. OUR design studio is in a very typically Parisian building that’s built in the Haussmann style, nestled sweetly in a very quiet courtyard on the Right Bank. It’s a hub of creativity that is full of mood boards on the walls and materials and prototypes everywhere. LINDOS, RHODES In Jasper Conran and Oisin Byrne’s home, the Sala (above) – formerly the hub of the house – is never used. It has been left untouched, pretty much as the couple found it – the raised platforms where entire generations lived together throughout the centuries are still there. Children were born and grew up in that room and then, when it was their turn, had their own children there. Conran and Byrne feel that they must respect the rhythm of the past. They are guardians of the Sala and will protect it, keeping it intact until, in the future, someone else inherits the mantle. Who doesn’t dream of finding a hidden gem – a neglected property that turns out to have a storied history – and turning it into a glorious sanctuary? The owners of this Mallorquin holiday home, situated on the coast of the Tramuntana Mountains, have done exactly this – with the assistance of architecture firm Moredesign. The house is located on land adjacent to Son Rullan, a 14th-century monastery just outside the village of Deià. The building, says Moredesign co-founder Manuel Villanueva, had been constructed in the 1990s and was ‘small and dull, surrounded by concrete terraces. The land was also neglected – an ancient olive grove abandoned and invaded by pine trees.’ Unfortunately, while the existing house was the very opposite of charming, Mallorca’s strict building regulations meant that it…

With a gift for taking ancient historical spaces and turning them into contemporary modern interiors, architect and designer Giuliano Andrea dell’Uva’s main point of reference when redesigning this 300sq m apartment dating from the late 1800s was to consider the architect who first designed the home. ‘The apartment and building were originally built for a single family, the Fuscos. I tried to put myself in the place of the architect of that time to imagine what his vision of decoration would be in the contemporary world.
