You will need • fabric dye • plastic table cover • protective gloves • white cotton cushion cover • bucket • water • elastic bands • zip-lock plastic bag • scissors • cushion pad 1 Protect your work surface with a plastic table cover and put on protective gloves. Immerse the cushion cover in a bucket of water until it’s soaked through. Remove, wring out the water and leave damp, but not dripping wet. 2 Next, pinch the cushion cover in the middle and pull into a tube shape. Use elastic bands to bind the fabric tightly at even intervals. Place inside a zip-lock bag. 3 Mix your chosen dye following the instructions. Use a storage tray to sort your cutlery into separate compartments. If you like matching sets, recyle any odd ones that have been kept along the way. Clear storage jars look stylish but they are also functional as they can be stacked on top of each other, saving space, but the contents are visible at a glance. Follow the rule of three: keep, throw, donate. And be brutal; if you haven’t worn that top for over a year, donate it to charity and let someone else enjoy it. Have the confidence to use colour. When we first moved in, I was at that stage of my life with work and parenting that painting everything white was the easy option. It’s only as my children have got older that I’ve started to experiment and become more confident. Buy cheap, buy twice. I chose a cheap stair carpet, thinking it would be okay, but it’s really started to show now so I wish I’d gone for better quality rather than the cheapest option. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Give your piece of furniture a good clean, making sure to hoover around any buttons and folds. Use masking tape to cover wooden legs or any parts that you don’t want to paint. Spray the fabric with plenty of water, and make sure that it’s all quite damp; this will help the first layer of paint seep into the fabric. Combine 50/50 chalk paint and water; using a stiff brush, apply the first layer followed by a smaller brush to do fiddly bits. With a rag or sponge, rub the paint into the fabric and don’t panic if it looks patchy. Let it dry, then, using a fine sandpaper, lightly sand the painted area. It might feel strange, but trust us! Repeat the process with two or three more layers…

Before designing a room, I do a moodboard on an app. I also like to get real-life samples to check that my ideas work before I commit to investing, so I don’t make expensive mistakes. FIND AND UPGRADE SECOND-HAND BUYS ‘I’ve found lots of really good-quality furniture in charity shops,’ says Julie, ‘and it’s so cheap and easy to upcycle them with new paint and fixtures. I painted this second-hand dresser in Red 03 by Lick, the same colour as the bottom section of the walls. By adding new handles, you can completely change the look of the piece. I found these wooden knobs in H&M Home, and I painted them in Lick Purple 04 to match the colour on the upper part of the walls. Describe your style in three words… Classic, retrospective, vintage. How did you get into textile design? It’s what I’ve always done. I did a foundation course in pattern design and then I went on to do a textile degree. I started working with high-street suppliers, such as M&S, River Island and Debenhams before I took a break to have my children. Be brave with your colour choices. No one thought the orange arches would work in the dining room as it’s such a traditional space, but I decided to give it a go anyway, and now everyone loves it. Go with your gut instincts and be open to bucking the trends. Dark wood isn’t particularly popular at the moment so it can be picked up cheaply, and sometimes it really works in a room, so give it a chance. I love painting, but not wallpapering. ‘I’d rather do the decorating myself and save a bit of money’ Consider the proportions of the wall and decide on the size and number of photos you want to display. Think about where the furniture is; you don’t want to be brushing your head against the frames every time you sit down. Attach picture hanging strips on the back of each frame. Decide how far apart you want each print to be; most picture grids tend to have between 2.5cm and 6cm between each one.
