IN FALL 2021, as US Congressional members debated pieces of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, a timely piece appeared in One Earth, a journal that presents research related to environmental challenges. Lead author Rusty Feagin, Ph.D., said the paper, “Infrastructure investment must incorporate Nature’s lessons in a rapidly changing world,” aimed to initiate conversations about incorporating natural elements into projects.
Natural elements go by many names, including nature-based solutions, nature-based features or natural infrastructure. But regardless of the names used, everyone involved in national infrastructure construction needs to shift their mindset toward these ideas, said Feagin, a Texas AgriLife Research professor and ecologist. He teaches in the departments of Ecology and Conservation Biology and Ocean Engineering at Texas A&M University, Bryan-College Station.
