Our Feb. ’12 cover car, the “Mashup in Metal,” owned by Mark Sax, just received a heart transplant in preparation for this year’s HOT ROD Drag Week™. Last year’s engine was a 427ci small-block Chevy that was monstrous enough on methanol to propel the part ’36 International truck/part ’58 Dodge to 9.00s at 147 mph. Now the team at CNA Performance (CNAPerformance.com) of Kansas City, Kansas, hopes to run it into the high 7s. “We had the old combination maxed out, and we were ready to go faster,” says builder and driver Chris Watkins. The elusive AMBR award for hot rod building has tormented many a builder and customer who toiled for years to possess it but failed. At each year’s Grand National Roadster show, the America’s Most Beautiful Roadster competition is judged by committee, and winning is not just about swirl-free paint and having every bolt head clocked the same way. Half of the criteria is based on how the cars are presented to the judges; every roadster must be driven in front of the judges in a confined space. Entrants have to fire up their engines cold, then drive in a circle from position in the field of entries and past judges who are scrutinizing every aspect of the car, and then park it. At 190 mph, the tiniest amount of slip angle is an attention getter. It’s not such a big deal at Bonneville or El Mirage, where Mother Earth’s surfaces provide a slippery grasp on speed yet a wide open landscape with nothing to hit. But at the Continental Tire Proving Grounds in Uvalde, Texas, 190 mph on the three-lane, 8.5-mile oval offers the genuine opportunity to drop a tire off the pavement and barrel roll through a chicken-wire fence, taking out six cows, two rattlesnakes, and a roadrunner as you go. Pump-gas motors are all the rage these days. Frankly, the power output has climbed so far into the stratosphere that much of the monster torque being produced is unusable on the street. But too much power is just enough, in our book. Besides, there’s always Drag Week™, which has become the ultimate proving ground for street-car dominance and engine performance and durability—and where turbo motors tend to leave nitrous and supercharged engines in the dust. I drive clapped-out cars. But there’s clapped out, and then there’s clapped out. There’s a fine nuance between rusty junk and an attractive patina. There’s nicely burnished paint and then there’s chalky yuckiness. For decades, I’ve tuned up bad paint with what I call the Comet wash. So many people have asked me about it that it’s time to reveal my not-so-secret methods. I find that Comet is a mystery to many guys. It’s just plain old kitchen cleanser. While we were visiting Chevrolet for last month’s story on the new COPO and ZL1 Camaros, we had the chance to visit GM’s Wixom Performance Build Center, which is an engine-assembly facility where every engine is put together by one worker, from start to finish. It’s where all the LS7, LS9, and dry-sump (Grand Sport) LS3 engines come from, and the COPO race engines will also be assembled there. During our tour, we were blown away by this contraption that tightens all the head bolts simultaneously, bringing them all to the correct torque-to-yield spec in just a few seconds. An emerging trend coming out of SoCal cruise scenes is motorized bicycles. Not motorcycles, not mopeds, but bikes with lawnmower-style engines. Most have a newer look than what you see here, but Mike Chiavetta—of the Donut Derelicts in Huntington Beach, California—had a different spin. “I admire ’20s board-track motorbikes, so I did a web search and discovered that the Henderson Bicycle Company also made motorcycles and often raced them,” Mike says. Mike told one Donut Derelict member of his idea to build a Henderson lookalike, and the guy turned up an N.O.S. Henderson emblem he had in his attic. Mike took it as a prophecy and got to work turning an old beach cruiser into a fantasy Henderson board-track racer. The badge ultimately wound up on the bike’s neck. Mike…

Say “corkscrew” to car nuts, and they’re likely to dream up images of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca long before any thoughts of a cabernet. And along with thoughts of the racetrack come mental pictures of Can-Am cars or Trans-Am racers like Parnelli Jones and Mark Donohue ripping down the famous 10-story drop between turns No. 8 and 9. Mazda Raceway in Salinas, California, is a 2.28-mile ring of asphalt filled with 11 glorious turns. In retrospect, the production of the ’94 Impala SS seemed obvious. In its basic form, the SS was just a modern take on the original recipe for the Impala SS: a high-performance engine in Chevrolet’s fullsize car. However, the car market wasn’t what it was in 1969, the last time an Impala wore an SS badge. In the early ’90s, auto manufacturers were finally learning how to make power while still meeting emissions guidelines. Powerful, rear-wheel-drive sedans were only available from the likes of BMW. That was about to change. The Impala SS concept was the brainchild of Jon Moss, then-manager of Chevrolet Special Vehicles. The B-body Caprice, redesigned in 1991 into the unflatteringly nicknamed “Orca” body style, wasn’t exactly setting the sales charts on fire. In late 1992, Jim…

This car has been on the cover of HOT ROD once before, on the May ’10 issue celebrating such projects in progress, and on the Aug. ’11 cover of Popular Hot Rodding. It’s under construction for the legendary George Poteet, who can be considered a benefactor of Troy and many other builders, always having two or three builds going at once. At 10 minutes before 10 a.m. on April 28, it became official. Garrell Patterson left the starting line in his Silverado pickup and arrived in the timing eyes 1 mile later at 132.247 mph. It was the very first pass at the Ohio Mile, and the first record. After nearly two years of work by the East Coast Timing Association and the city of Wilmington, Ohio, it all became real. I’d rather be quick than fast. Brutal acceleration, however brief it might be, stirs something in my gut more violently than top-end longevity. A hairy one-two shift without a lot of smoke always puts a grin on my face. A flyweight car with a monster motor and massive amounts of grip is a recipe for perfection, as far as I’m concerned. This is the No. 7 rod bearing out of our newly purchased ’66 Oldsmobile Delta 88 convertible (we mention it’s a convertible because that’s its only redeeming quality). “Just has dead gas,” the Craigslist seller told us over the phone. “Yeah, just a couple hundred in the engine, a couple hundred in the interior, and you got a nice car,” said the guy who obviously knew nothing more about mechanics than how to call AAA. He claimed it ran before he parked it, which is technically true—it just ran with a bad knock, and for obviously way too long. THE COMBO Powered by a mild 350 small-block shifted by a TH350 automatic trans, Bill Ancona’s ’37 Chevy two-door sedan had delivered decades of reliable service. But after 22 years and 30,000 miles, Bill started noticing small fuel drops on the garage floor below the car’s old inline electric minipump. Figuring it was about to give up the ghost, he replaced the pump with an apparently similar-size and similar-capacity universal unit from the local auto-parts store. Then things went south. Chevrolet says a rear-wheel-drive, V8-powered sedan will be available for the ’14 model year. It will be an American version of the Holden VF Commodore built in Australia and will be called the SS. That’s it. No Impala. No Caprice. Just SS. It will use the same Zeta chassis architecture as the Camaro but will have a shorter wheelbase than the Caprice PPV or upcoming front-wheel-drive ’14 Impala, though. The ’14 model is a placeholder for an all-new version we hope will show up sometime in 2016. The SS will also become Chevy’s Nextel Cup car starting with the Daytona 500 in February 2013. The street version will arrive about the same time. The SS is essentially a Pontiac G8, but because of franchise laws, GM couldn’t rebadge a G8…

The ’96 version finally got a floor shifter, which happens to be Moss’ personal favorite, though we prefer the column shift and the console with the cupholders in the ’94s and ’95s. The ’94 Impala and Caprice exterior rearview mirrors were mounted on stalks. The ’95–’96s have them tucked at the corners of the side glass. The option codes for the Impala SS from ’94–’96 were BN5, BL5, and 1SS, respectively. Callaway offered a 404hp, 383-powered Supernatural Impala SS. The package cost $25,345 on top of the $24,405 base price in 1995. It ran the quarter-mile in 14.0 in a Motor Trend test. The original concept car was later treated to a 540ci big-block. Weeks before Freiburger and Finnegan played around with the Sailor Jerry car and the Lambo, we hit the road for the car’s maiden voyage. It was a solid plan: hop in a rusty, low-slung, radically chopped ’31 Model A Tudor with only a modicum of suspension travel, and drive it 300 miles from Orange County, California, to the 15th Annual Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender (VivaLasVegas.com). One-trick-pony muscle cars are dead. The Pro Touring movement started it, and the war between Ford and GM finished it. Camaros and Mustangs now go around corners with legs long enough to spank imported hardware that costs as much as a house in the hills. The latest ZL1 and GT500 deserve the supercar moniker, and because this is America, your supercar costs less than $67,000, avoids the gas-guzzler tax, and has a great warranty. The ZL1 is good. RACING IN BIB OVERALLS My chickens all had limberneck, and I was going broke. I’d been vaccinating chickens and was running late, so I drove out to the track in my overalls. It was hot, about 110 degrees, and I decided to leave the overalls on because I thought they’d be cooler to drive in. I won the race in them and everybody giggled and laughed, but they ran my picture in the paper in those overalls. I decided, shoot, this is a pretty good deal, and I kept on doing it. Centrifugal superchargers blowing into carburetors continue to be hugely popular. There are a number of ways to funnel boost into the carb, but the most common seems to be the use of a simple bonnet like the one seen here. There are endless opinions on these things, so take ours as just another one on the stack. In our experience, the clocking of the bonnet can make a huge difference in the quality of the fuel distribution—so much so that we’ve seen engines that burble horribly and can’t handle WOT with the bonnet clocked one way, but that run fine if the inlet is rotated into a good position. That’s especially true of bonnets with divided inlets, such as the one depicted here. If you’re battling some carb weirdness, try…

Q: On a stock 327 Chevy with a 0.447-inch-lift cam, will installing 1.6:1 roller-tip rockers make that much of a difference over the stock 1.5:1 stamped rockers? A: There are several broad rules of thumb that provide clues to whether increasing rocker-arm ratio will prove to be a performance boon with a given engine, cylinder head, and camshaft combination. Generally speaking (and remember, there are exceptions to every rule), the smaller the cam, the greater the performance gain from increasing rocker-arm ratio. The better the cylinder head, the more you can expect from high-ratio rockers. The larger the valves, the greater the improvement. These factors are interrelated. The intake- and exhaust-valve heads present a restriction to airflow into and out of the ports. There has to be a certain minimum…

Thieves suck! The only thing more gratifying than finding your car after it’s stolen is finding the SOB who snatched it. A bunch of different companies offer GPS tracking units to help you do just that. What makes this one unique is that it’s meant specifically for vehicles that aren’t driven often, like hot rods or motorcycles, because it’s designed not to kill the battery. According to ArrowTrack founder Chris Hines, the unit goes into sleep mode after three hours of inactivity, and then draws less than 1.2 milliamps. ArrowTrack says other GPS brands will kill a car battery in a week, whereas the ArrowTrack, if left unattended, will take years to drain the battery.
