IN THREE WORDS: Trans-Am Reborn
THE GIST: If Trans-Am racing stayed true to its ’60s form, the result would be something very similar to the Australian V-8 Supercar series. There’s the requisite OE involvement with real production cars, Ford versus GM (Holden) brand rivalry, screamin’ 5.0L V-8s, minimal body modifications, colorful driver personalities, and fender-crunching fun. Over the years diverse fields have included BMWs, Jaguars, Alfa Romeos, Chrysler Valiants, Toyota Celicas, Nissan Skylines, Novas, Mustangs, and Camaros. In 1994, to keep the series more Australian, rules changed to allow only V-8-powered vehicles. Races are run throughout Australia in both sprint and endurance formats ranging between 20 minutes and over 2 hours.
