Like any subculture worth its weight in salt, hot rodding had a look, a lifestyle, and a sound. Sure, you had wispy Jan & Dean/Beach Boys car ballads, but back in the early ’60s, revved-up guitar-mauling instrumental combos such as the Nervous Kats, the Ree-Gents, and the Tempests were the real action. These bands captured the excitement of drag racing by playing too loud, too fast—until the amps blew or the audience counterattacked.
