On the Sunday before the big 500 and 16 miles east of that classic, the hot rods staged a 100-mile championship event. When this 200-lap race, held at the Greenfield Speed Bowl, was over, Johnny Arnold of Anderson, Indiana, was the victor in 1 hour, 27:10 minutes.
Other places in the race went to Ray Erickson of Chicago, second; Lawrence Manship, Fortville, third; Bud Jorgenson, Denver, Colorado, fourth; and Gene Walters, St. Louis, Missouri, fifth.
Arnold drove one of the two McCormick Brothers entries, a ’26T-Merc, and has been driving in Indiana circuits for the past four years. The other identical McCormick entry was the one driven by Audrey Patterson.
Qualifying trials were held at 10 in the morning of the race day. From these times, the positions were determined.…
