On the Sunday before the big 500 and 16 miles east of that classic, the hot rods staged a 100-mile championship event. When this 200-lap race, held at the Greenfield Speed Bowl, was over, Johnny Arnold of Anderson, Indiana, was the victor in 1 hour, 27:10 minutes. Other places in the race went to Ray Erickson of Chicago, second; Lawrence Manship, Fortville, third; Bud Jorgenson, Denver, Colorado, fourth; and Gene Walters, St. Louis, Missouri, fifth. Arnold drove one of the two McCormick Brothers entries, a ’26T-Merc, and has been driving in Indiana circuits for the past four years. On the Saturday preceding Memorial Day, the CRA staged its second annual 5 00-lap hot rod race—an exciting classic that won national acclaim and gave Southern California race fans four hours of racing thrills. Run on the ½-mile Carrell Speedway at Gardena, the 5 00-lap race totalled 250 miles. This year’s record, made on asphalt, eclipsed last year’s record by almost ½ hour—3 hours, 45 minutes, 14 seconds as against 4 hours, 12 minutes, 39 seconds. Last year’s race was run on the old dirt track. Qualifying was held the week prior to the race. With around 70 cars attempting to make the line-up of 33 starting positions, qualification trials took two days to complete. Only one non-local driver, from Arizona, succeeded in making the show. FOUR NEW class records were established and many sensational high qualifying speeds were attained during the second running of the Southern California Timing Association Speed Trials on June 11 and 12 th. The two-day timing event was run over the straightaway course located at El Mirage Dry Lake, California, where a total of more than 200 cars were entered in competition. With three organizations conducting timing events on the dry lake bed every month, the surface has become very rough and loose. During the running of the meet, it was necessary to change the path of the course three different times. WHAT IS undoubtedly one of the oddest and most unique hot rods anywhere in the U.S. is the one owned and built by Bill Kenz of Denver, Colorado. Featured as the “Odd Rod if the Month,” this twin-engine combination has been nicknamed “Stump Puller” by racing fans in and around that city. Bill, a Ford man for some 30 years, and part owner of a Ford garage in Denver, was born on the west side on December 10, 1905. His schooling suffered because at the age of 1 5 he found it necessary to find work in a local automobile agency. He is now married, has one daughter, and owns his home in South Denver. IN A Russetta Timing meet that saw two new records established, a Class C Coupe stole the show by turning a fast 127.66 mph. This ’32 V-8 coupe, owned and driven by Fran Hernandez, is powered by a 295 cubic-inch Merc, with Offenhauser heads and manifold, Winfield cam, and Kurten ignition. After making his qualifying run, Hernandez went on to set a record average of 120.48 mph, not good enough to break the existing record of 121.47, held by Lou Baney. The two new records set at this meet were by two joint entrants, the Reem-snyder-Sullivan A Roadster, and the Du-bois-Kavanaugh B Sedan. Sacramento Here are pictures of a couple of the cars from Sacramento. Mel Falconer’s ’39 Ford convertible runs a quarter-stroke V-B with Denver heads, Grancor manifold and 3.54 gears. Body work was done by Westergard. Norm Milne owns this A V-8. Engine is equipped with Meyers heads, Offen-hauser manifold, 3 5 / 16 bore, ⅛ stroke, Weber cam. Body work on this car was also done by Westergard. Car timed 114 with S.C.T.A. in 1947.
