The first part of the article, which appeared in the September, 1949 issue of HRM, covered the following: effect of venturi, valve timing effects, calculation of venturi size, correct size carburetor, tuning the carburetor, troubles not due to carburetion, and manifold design. This section of the article is concerned with manifold and venturi considerations of the single-cylinder, four-cylinder, six-cylinder, eight-cylinder in-line and V-8 engines, along with a discussion of advantages and disadvantages of different types of manifolding arrangements. On all multiple manifold installations, the use of a balance tube between the manifolds is necessary to dampen pulsations and make the engine idle better. Four new manifolds for V8’s and Mer-curys are being made by the Offenhauser Equipment Corporation of Los Angeles. All four feature new routings for better performance. The Regular model is for early model V8’s, the ’42-’48 and the ’49 models are self-explanatory, and the Three Carburetor model is for all V8’s and Mercurys. The Regular will sell for $42.50, the ’42-’48 and Three Carburetor models will run $44.95, while the ’49 manifold will retail at $49.50. All prices quoted are F.O.B. Los Angeles. A cast aluminum finned side plate for Model A Flatheads is being produced by Dave Burns of Huntington Park, California. The plate is of the narrow type and will sell at $5.00. Hot Rod Magazine has undergone a change. This month, the magazine is sporting a new cover which is indicative of the progress being made. More pages have been added, each bringing readers a wealth of information on CARS and what makes them go. Wally Parks, former business manager of the Southern California Timing Association and a long-time advocate of hot rod interests, has taken over editorship of HRM. His years of experience as an S.C.T.A. official and organizer give him the technical background necessary for the position. By the announcement almost one year ago of a new overhead valve V-8, Cadillac stimulated much interest in the minds of the hot rod fraternity. To the author’s knowledge, the use of this engine in a competition car has not yet taken place. Perhaps the intelligent adaptation of this new power plant to a suitable chassis will provide some eye-opening performance. Until that happens, an estimate of this engine’s possibilities as a competition unit may prove interesting. The 1949 Cadillac engine is most outstanding because it is a complete departure from the 1948 engine in so many respects. As a competition engine, the 1948 version suffered because of its bulk and weight compared to the popular Ford and Mercury engines. This disadvantage has been lessened in the 1949 Cad by…

Q. I have a ’49 Ford, strictly stock, but I want to raise the compression ratio. If I were to take .060 inch off the heads is there danger of breaking the pistons? Would it be advisable to buy high compression heads? Donald E. Raun Vallejo, California A. Taking .060 inch off the heads will not cause any damage to your engine, providing you drive it sensibly and do not allow it to overheat. You can mill your heads the amount you suggest, then if you are not satisfied with the performance, you can exchange them for high compression heads.
