Drag racers, runnng at more than 200 legal drag strips throughout the United States, racked up a total of more than a million timed runs during the 1958 competition season! These figures were compiled by the National Hot Rod Association, official sanctioning organization for drag racing, which lists about half of the nation’s total strips as its affiliates.
Last year’s car entries at NHRA drag events numbered 64,793 in all. Based on a conservative average of nine runs per entry, these contestants made 583,137 runs—145,784 miles in acceleration, 218,676 miles in decelerating and braking, and 364,460 miles returning to the pits. That’s a lot of miles traveled in anybody’s sport, and it doesn’t even hint at the countless miles traveled by tow cars, push cars, crew transport and spectators’ vehicles.…
