When the First International Drag Festival was announced to be scheduled over three weekends in the fall of 1964, Britons quickly realized that if England were to make her mark in the contests against American drag racers it would necessarily be in the field of motorcycling. The conclusion was primary; England had nothing’ with which to compete against the vast displacement U.S. engines in the ‘‘garden variety” Yank dragsters, gassers, or even stockers. The technology was in its infancy there, scarcely beyond embryo state, but “sprinting” was a long-time sport, well organized and developed by the acceleration-minded ’cyclists of the Isles, and some impressive records had been set. It appears as though this month’s report is a bit of a potpourri of “things and stuff,” all of which should be of interest. First item is Kiekhaefer’s newest power package. Named the MerCruiser 60, the new unit is a stern drive, in-board/outboard combination that incorporates the best features of both. Designed for boats as small as 14 feet in length, the compact transom-mount installation takes no more boat space than a conventional outboard with a drain well. The engine is a Renault marine conversion, boasting a 60-horse output from 67.6 cubic inches. This is coupled to a new MerCruiser O-drive unit which was specially designed for this 4-in-line four-cycle engine. The O-drive has a tilt-up feature for shallow water and trailering. WORKMANSHIP, NOT MONEY Dear Sirs: In regard to the editorial in December HOT Rod, when you referred to “rusty bailing wire specials,” this is all many people can afford. “Joe Average” has, say, 1000 dollars to spend on a car. A pair of slicks, for example, costs about 50 dollars, a used Chevy V8 (one of the least expensive popular engines) costs at least 200 dollars and that, of course, does not include special cams, pistons, manifolds, etc. When you add the cost of the frame, running gear, body, etc., there is little or none of the 1000 dollars left for bodywork, special paint, chroming and the like. Chevrolet’s 427 engine that set Daytona on its ear in 1963 and was appropriately dubbed the “Mystery V8" because of the secrecy which enveloped the project has risen like the legendary phoenix from the ashes of GM’s abandoned racing program to appear this year as a production option; albeit in less than all-out form. As most of you know from HRM’s report two years ago (May 1963), the Chevys showed everyone the way around the track with 165.68 speeds during qualifications but didn’t quite cut the mustard (the best finishing ninth) for the full 500-mile ordeal due to a variety of reasons, not the least of which was the fact that the front office put the lid on competition just prior to the race. Quite a storm of controversy was stirred up when the jet cars began to make their appearances on the salt flats a few years back. The biggest question was focused on the qualification of the cars for the World Land Speed Record title: Were the records to be internationally recognized? FIA, the international body that governs racing and speed records, made its new ruling the latter part of last year; the record was opened to jets when officials ruled that any type of vehicle is eligible if it has four wheels, two of which must be steerable. O.K., sport, you’re lookin’ at it — that new competition job I promised you. It is one of the very topmost, exciting things Britain has to offer for the coming year and it’s called the BSA Victor. Up until a few years ago, dragster designers were not so much concerned with chassis sophistication as they were with brute horsepower. This phenomenon was and had been the case because all previous quarter-mile history declared unequivocally that an increase of engine output automatically ensured a corresponding improvement of trap speed. And then a strange thing happened; blowers, fuel, wild camshaft designs, and a host of similar innovations caused powerplants to far outstrip available traction, and performance leveled off in the blue haze of burning rubber. After a time, better-bite tire compounds were produced and, along with them, chassis became more responsive to track surface demands, vis-a-vis available horsepower, so performance jumped to a much higher plateau. The day has long passed since the ubiquitous Model T roamed in profusion about the land. Like the buffalo, another ever-so-American product, it is now found living in protected sanctuary, guarded against extinction. Two of the very last of the great herds, born in 1927, are kept in the far west end of the San Fernando Valley in California by Bob Grossi and Chuck Miller. Both coupe and roadster genders are represented, and each ‘T’ retains its identity despite inbreeding with later model strains. Twenty-five hundred years ago, give or take a few, a group of Greeks got together and built some of the world’s most beautiful and most copied structures. Along the way they concocted something called geometry which has been anything but easily understood by school students. What this all has to do with constructing a 200-mph dragster may seem far afield, but it isn’t, for in our particular step-by-step frame construction analysis, geometry, scientific method and some good old-fashioned logic are the ingredients that enable the builder to fabricate a light, safe rail that will run straight. Forty-two of the nation’s leading drag strips will provide the asphalt and other facilities for the hottest quarter-mile racing action in the history of the sport during the 1965 season. These National Hot Rod Association sanctioned strips will host the 42 meets that will comprise the World Championship points calendar of competition. Six meets will be held within each of the seven geographical divisions, and points received in competition at these races will determine the contestants for the big World Championship Finals to be held next November.
