For most of the season, drivers Greg Weld and Rollie Beale kept a hot argument rolling as to who should nab the 1967 United States Auto Club sprint car championship. Weld won seven races, Beale five. Then Beale wrecked his car and broke his leg at Reading, Pennsylvania, removing himself from contention. Weld, the tough 23-year-old who has been racing professionally since he was 16, thought he was home free. But surprising Sam Sessions won a big 100-lap race at Winchester, Indiana, and was challenging Greg as the sprinter circuit swung to the California coast in November for the final three races: one at Altamont, and two “jinx meets” at Ascot Park.
“We're running for the championship,” Sessions declared. “We're after Greg and we're serious about it.”
