GASSERS GALORE
Before the advent of Funny Cars, the world’s fastest and quickest stock-bodied drag racers were called Gassers—a nickname given to those evil, lightweight, supercharged or unblown gas-burning Anglias, Austins, Henry Js, Studebakers, Thames and Willys that competed in the coupe and sedan classes during the ’50s and ’60s.
This year, Rob Frazier and the Mid-America Willys Club recreated the past by staging the first World Gasser Championship at the famed mile-high Bandimere Speedway located near Denver, Colorado.
The all-coupe-and-sedan event featured two days of hauling gas, in addition to a car show, a swap meet, parades and barbecues.
Fast time of the meet was turned in by Mel Bryson of Springfield, Oregon, whose supercharged ’33 Willys hummed the eyes at 163, while Wayne Harry’s ’41 Willys…
