Thirty summers ago, my parents and family friends rented a big, old Victorian near the beach in Rhode Island. When winter winds howl through their Illinois town, Dan and Karen Heller think of Summer—Chicago designer Summer Thornton, that is. The smashing good looks of their getaway north of Naples, Florida, as bright and breezy as a perfect July day, are thanks entirely to Thornton living up to her name. And sure, a G&T is classic, but we suggest mixing up a conversationworthy cocktail—it’s not much harder. “THE DANGER IN DOING A contemporary bathroom is that it can feel cold,” says Pamela Butz of Butz +Klug Architecture, who remodeled this home near Boston with partner Jeffrey Klug. Their solution was a design that errs on the side of simplicity, but with beautiful, natural materials that “speak for themselves.” One of those materials is Equator marble, often used in hammams; aligning the lines of the slabs creates a single horizon in the wet room.
