Gordon was a dear friend and ally of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the two shared an ethos that still permeates the pages of this magazine: that a beautiful life begins at home. Tiny houses are a trend now, but this home is 116 years old! How did its size influence you? SARAH BARTHOLOMEW: I always let a house tell its story, and this one was clear about what it needed to be: a pretty, all-American home in beautiful, historic Georgetown. Whoever built it was not especially wealthy, so I tried to keep the style simple: fresh, eclectic, and easygoing, but not loose or casual. CELIA BARBOUR: Was a 1,200-square-foot house with just four rooms—two downstairs, two up—a design challenge? Yes. For example, it has no foyer—you walk right off the street into the living room. I wanted to create a moment by the front door where you could pause and hang your coat, but it had to feel cohesive with the room.…

As a designer, what is more challenging: living in a 600-square-foot apartment or the fact that some of the best antiques dealers in Manhattan are right across the street? JOSHUA GREENE: I was willing to give up space to live on one of the nicest blocks in Greenwich Village. Plus, the apartment has nine-and-a-half-foot ceilings. It’s funny, when my business partner, Katrina Hernandez, and I started Hernandez Greene a few years ago, my dining room was our office! Now I have all of the space—three rooms total—to myself. ICED-COFFEE CUBES Makes about 12 3 cups black coffee, cold 3 cupswholemilk or half-and-half 1/2 c up chocolatemilk 1. Fill large, square ice-cube molds, such as Tovolo’s King Cube tray, with a thin layer of coffee and freeze. Once this first layer has frozen (about two hours), add a layer of milk or half-and-half and freeze. Then, add a thin layer of chocolate milk and freeze.
