But the most reader-reviled rooms in the magazine all share a single thing in common: blistering originality. Few of the negative e-mails, letters, and calls I receive are complaints about blue bedrooms, but rather about rooms with provocative displays of personality—wallpaper, art, personal collections. In short: a point of view. To me, the most refreshing rooms are the ones in which the owner’s individuality speaks louder than conventional beauty—the homes of people surrounded by their passions. Is it safe to say that your cl?ents love to live large? SUMMER THORNTON: Ha! They are a couple in their 60s with three grown children and one grandchild. They built this home as a weekend retreat with the hope that there will soon be additional little feet padding around. They also love to entertain and sometimes host as many as 20 guests. KATHLEEN HACKETT: So the thinking was, If they build it, the babies—and family, and friends—will come? Pretty much! This is one of those classic Jersey Shore homes, isn’t it? JOE LUCAS: It’s actually brand-new—an updated version of the 1926 Shingle Style home that was here when the current owner bought the property in 2009.
