The origin of the term flea market couldn’t be less romantic: Vendors hawking their wares in the slums of 19th-century Paris were said to work in a marché aux puces, literally “the fleas’ market.” But today’s swap meets are proud destinations, not to mention the ultimate choice for sustainable shopping. Designer and HGTV regular Sarah Richardson is an unabashed, compulsive rummage-sale buyer, but she’s also pragmatic: “Don’t go to a flea market at the end of a decorating project, when you’re looking for something specific. You’ll end up in tears!” she says. Instead, Richardson recommends keeping your eyes on the prize: the thrill of the search itself (OK, and a few very specific items). Dani Arps didn’t exactly plan on becoming an A-list designer. “People ask, ‘Is this something you’ve always wanted to do?’ and I’m like, ‘No, not really—I just happen to be good at it and enjoy it!’” she laughs. After studying fine art and music as an undergrad, her dad suggested she go to Brooklyn’s prestigious Pratt Institute for a masters in interior design. Flash forward a few years, and Arps is now the go-to for New York tech startups (think SeatGeek, Venmo, Yipit) looking for offce spaces filled with personality. “What I love about doing offices is that it’s never really just offices,” she says. “My clients want event spaces, lounges, cafés—a lot of them started their companies in homes or coffee shops, so we try to keep that feeling!”…

When people renovate older houses, they almost always start by knocking down a few second-floor walls to create an enormous master suite. Not at Edgewood Hall though: For us, the home’s original (and, by modern standards, modestly sized) master bedroom held so much more charm than a sprawling space. Of course we made a few changes. The neighboring twin guest room was turned into an adjoining dressing room and master bath, and in the bedroom itself, we installed a tray ceiling to open things up without expanding the floorplan. (The recessed design also let us take advantage of unusable attic space above.) Decor-wise, glossy, light-reflecting white paint provided the backdrop for a colorful mix of new and old items with a globe-trotting feel—bright kilim rugs, red lacquered chests, crisp white…

Architect Maxime Vandal was indulging his penchant for real-estate porn when he came across a listing for a circa-1890 Second French Empire–style home in the historic Westmount neighborhood of Montreal. A week later, he and his husband, designer Richard Ouellette, made an offer on the property. Never mind that the pair had sold their Craftsman house in the same tony suburban enclave not even a year earlier, and had spent the last nine months renovating a co-op apartment in downtown Montreal. “We were pretty impulsive,” Ouellette admits. As partners and co-owners of the design-and-construction firm Les Ensembliers, the pair is always up for a new project. “Some women buy shoes. We buy houses,” Vandal quips. The word glamour may conjure an overly cinematic scene—a bedazzled starlet gliding across a red carpet, sipping a coupe of Champagne—but Jeff Andrews has a rebuttal. “It’s about creating personal glamour,” says the designer. His book, The New Glamour: Interiors with Star Quality (Rizzoli, April 2), chronicles the highly tailored homes he has devised for boldface names, among them Kourtney Kardashian, Kris Jenner, and Kaley Cuoco (who adores him so much, she wrote the foreword).
