WE PLAN TO DO A LOT OF ENTERTAINING at Edgewood Hall, so as soon as we walked through the petite living room into a ratty screened-in porch, our first inclination was to transform it into a space we could use all year. We replaced the screens with energy-efficient Ply-Gem windows and French doors, raised and insulated the ceiling, and—since installing a full set of HVAC vents would’ve been a massive hassle and expense—put in a radiant-heat floor for warmth. Instead of a muggy-in-the-summer, freezing-in-the-winter porch, we now have a room for indoor gardening (I’m all about citrus trees and ferns) and hosting guests—two of my favorite things. “She made it socially and professionally acceptable for women to be interior designers.” IT WAS A SPRING DAY IN THE CATSKILLS, and Candace Thurber Wheeler was looking for a mountaintop. She’d grown up nearby and, after a career in the decorative arts in New York City, she wanted to build a vacation home. There were stipulations, though: The plot had to have a great view and robust natural surroundings.
