WHEN DESIGNER META Coleman first laid eyes on this 1980s track home just north of San Diego, she felt the house, with its red Saltillo floors, stucco walls, and grille windows, “wanted to be Spanish Colonial Revival,” she says. But the clients hoped for a more pan-European vibe, with lots of color and texture. Coleman knew a major tile moment—or two—was just the push it needed to truly make a statement. “Tile has always inspired me,” she explains. “It’s utilitarian but so beautiful.” Along with a style update, the family of seven longed for a more user-friendly kitchen than the original, awkward configuration. “The pantry was diagonal and tiny,” Coleman recalls. “And the island came into the room at two different angles, like a trapezoid.” To solve these problems, Coleman moved…

AFTER A FLOOD CAUSED water damage to her Seattle workplace studio, interior designer Reena Ravi saw an opportunity to infuse the space with some “sultry urban glam.” To achieve that vibe, she says, “I started with brass and ran with it.” A circa 2006 condo, the studio was a dark, gloomy space in desperate need of personality. Although Ravi had free rein when it came to style, she faced other limitations: Complex HOA regulations kept her from moving any of the existing plumbing. That setback meant the appliance layout had to remain. While Ravi couldn’t shift the setup, she did move it straight up, installing sky-high cabinets to take advantage of every inch afforded by the 13-foot ceilings. THE HOMEOWNERS envisioned this project as a redesign for a chic “look but don’t cook” kitchen. But designer Jerel Lake of Lakehaus Designs knew the space could do more. “They have a second kitchen in the back, so this one was a showpiece,” he explains. “But it still needed to function, be practical, and have all the essentials.” He wasn’t intimidated by the small size of the room—but he did keep height in mind. The home they were renovating was in Seattle. But Hoedemaker Pfeiffer interior design partner Tim Pfeiffer and lead designer Peak Petersen looked to another metropolis to drive their aesthetic. Their clients, a couple with 11-year-old twins and a dog, had spent years living in Los Angeles. BAKING WITH THREE SMALL KIDS IS not for the fainthearted. To do it, you ideally need two things: a kitchen you love to spend time in and organization that makes cooking a joy. The owners of this Dallas home sought to gain both through their remodel, which they hoped would transform their kitchen from a functional but boring cold, white space into a “wow moment in the heart of their home,” says Ginger Curtis, president of Urbanology Designs. “They wanted a beautiful backdrop to their memories.” The team put the majority of the budget toward the kitchen’s centerpiece: a reeded marble island, hand-carved to preserve its veining. But Melissa LaSalle, known on Instagram as “The Book Mommy,” felt that after some choppy additions, her 1930s Colonialstyle home outside Washington, D.C., had lost the plot.
