SUNSHINE COAST, QLD Tent House by Sparks Architects commands a small clearing within a ten-hectare remnant swathe of rainforest on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The fluid curves of the canopy structure have a kind of ephemeral impermanence against the backdrop of the forty-metre-tall vestigial landscape in a setting reminiscent of a temporary camp, which reveals itself incrementally from a winding forest track. • MELBOURNE, VIC • You could say that Elgin Street Residence is Sonelo Design Studio’s first architecture project, but co-founder Wilson Tang spent nine years at Inarc Architects honing his residential design skills, so really it’s his latest house design, the first under his own brand. This project had some significant differences from the high-end residential work that Wilson was used to at Inarc Architects, not least being the relatively constrained budget. •SYDNEY,NSW• Balmain Semi expresses beautiful links between the house’s Federation heritage and its future as a contemporary family home. From the street it presents politely enough, with a newly planted cottage garden, brickwork restored and timber fretwork revived with a coat of china blue paint. Not much more appears altered, but inside is a revelation. Consider the brief for the renovation of this double-storey Victorian house in the Melbourne suburb of Kew – it hits all the classic notes. The owners, a couple with three kids, needed to transform the old building’s rabbit-warren plan into a contemporary home for the next stage of their lives, with spaces and zones coordinated rather than clashing. They wanted connected indoor and outdoor living areas; the back of the house was barnacled with a series of dodgy add-ons, which had to be prised off. MEL BOURNE , VIC When the clients for East Melbourne Terrace decided to relocate from their home in the suburb of Canterbury, they had specific requirements in mind: a smaller house, with little-to-no upkeep, and something that was modern and new. While a grand nineteenth-century terrace house didn’t quite meet their brief, they loved it enough to purchase it, with the knowledge that significant work would be required before their visions were realized and they could move in. The clients sought the advice and expertise of architect Jerry Wolveridge of Wolveridge Architects, who undertook their brief to completely renovate the existing terrace and revisit the rear extension, which had been built some ten years prior. 01 Why did you decide to engage an architect? We felt the house was of historic significance and quality and needed the expertise of an architect. We wanted to ensure that sufficient attention was given to improving the old part of the house, rather than just focusing on the new part and leavingthe old as is. While we had moderately firm ideas on what we wanted, we did need a lot of guidance and the reality is that we had no practical experience in renovations – without an architect we would have been quite out of our depth. • SYDNEY, NSW • The eastern Sydney suburb of Queens Park is part of a significant urban green belt comprised of Centennial Park, Moore Park and its namesake, Queens Park. The leafy green streets that shaded me en route to the house hint at the nearby parkland amenity. The suburb is equally reflective of its earlier title – it was originally classified as part of Bondi Junction. This is evident in the suburb’s density and the impression of houses seemingly competing with one another for space and views. The D House by Marston Architects straddles this interesting junction of parkland and density, and responds with sensitivity to the urban challenges that are associated with such a site. • MELBOURNE, VIC • The Choong House burst onto Melbourne’s architectural scene in the late 1980s, heralding the innovative work of three young architects: Roger Wood, Randal Marsh and Dale Jones-Evans. Biltmoderne, the practice they formed, energetically positioned their design impetus across furniture, interiors and architecture. The Choong House demonstrated their aptitude for exploring ideas of movement, form and material through the typology of the pavilion, and it garnered awards locally and internationally. Ken Choong, a successful young businessperson, presented the project opportunity and in his search for an architect was pleased by Biltmoderne’s response to his sparse brief and the site he had purchased in the outer-urban Melbourne suburb of Eltham. • EXHIBITION • Inspired by his peripatetic existence, South Korean artist Do Ho Suh views life as a passageway. “We tend to focus on the destination all the time and forget about the in-between spaces,” he states in the Passage/s exhibition guide. “But without these mundane spaces that nobody really pays attention to, these grey areas, one cannot get from point A to point B.” Not content with merely noticing transitional domestic spaces – entry halls and corridors – he uses vibrantly coloured textiles to celebrate them in immersive installations.
