I WAS BORN in 1961, on the eve of a tumultuous decade—war, assassinations, the struggle for civil rights, the election of Richard Nixon. I was too young to do anything about any of it, except to watch it unfold on TV. It may look like Downton Abbey on wheels, but this is for anyone who likes the idea of donning traditional English cycling garb, then cruising through downtown neighborhoods. WHEN YOU BITE into Beholder’s “crispy beef tongue pancake,” you really have to focus on what you are tasting. All at once, you’re hit with the meat’s malty sizzle against the pancake’s stealthy sauerkraut infusion, a sliver of dilled turnip giving a pickly, faintly spicy snap. Horseradish mustard adds creaminess, and a feather of frisée merely suggests lettuce. FOR MOST OF his adult years, the superbly mustached, indubitably dapper, and wildly wealthy Captain William Easton English occupied a well-appointed suite at the English Hotel, on Monument Circle. Apartment 104 was one of the few constants in an otherwise thoroughly unpredictable life. Will, as most called him, had watched his father, William Hayden English, build the hotel’s first section in 1880. When William H. died in 1896 as Indiana’s wealthiest man, Will and his sister, Rosalind, split an estate valued at more than $2 million—around $51 million in today’s dollars. SOME OF Bill Berg’s traditional mountain instruments may look like the sort of thing played alongside a whiskey jug in a holler, but they’ve landed in the hands of rock’s biggest stars. “R.E.M. bought a specialized instrument from me that had a sitar-like sound,” Berg says. Turning out dulcimers, harps, and psalteries since the 1970s, the 68-year-old craftsman has also supplied many recording studios. Berg began studying under a violinmaker after graduating from high school. Later, he peddled his handmade instruments at craft fairs and music festivals. “I sold to a lot of young women who wanted to be like Joni Mitchell,” he says. “Now, I sell to older ladies, and Joni Mitchell would be in that ‘older lady’ category.” Perhaps Berg’s most popular instrument is the dulcimer. Parkside Linen owner Shandon Whistler wandered into THE CLEAN BEDROOM store on Fifth Avenue last year and ended up convincing the company to expand to Indy, believing there was a void of chemical-free and organic mattresses. Now the store is Parkside’s neighbor in Nora. Somtimes in the next few months, three men from Indianapolis will auction off several dozen midcentury-modern lamps and pieces of furniture in Paris. That’s remarkable in itself. Equally incredible is the story behind it. The tale begins in 2001, when architect Craig McCormick made a “random” stop in Veedersburg, Indiana, on his way to Illinois. McCormick, a midcentury-modern enthusiast, had recently started collecting the work of a Veedersburg-based company called Marshall Studios. The business had shut down nearly 20 years earlier; McCormick was curious if anything remained of its factory. What he found surprised him. “It was abandoned, but all of the company catalogs and information were still there,” he says.
