In the middle of the night last March, my husband and I awoke to a window-ratt ling boom. The sound had not been a plane crash (my first guess). Instead, the Church of the Holy Cross’s gorgeous decorative molding—part of its 1922 Italian Renaissance design—had fallen from the facade, litt ering the sidewalk and street with a pile of brick and stone. IN BASEBALL TERMS, Westfield was behind in the count. By 2007, the city’s neighbors in the southern half of Hamilton County already had established themselves. Carmel boasted a posh reputation and a burgeoning arts-and-design district. Fishers had affordable housing and great schools. Noblesville featured a historic downtown with a trove of local businesses. Westfield was growing, but it lacked an identity. DESIGNER BEN LEFFERS makes a dock for an iPhone or iPod that looks like it belongs in a Wes Anderson film—a Victrola horn amplifies your Adele playlist. But the gadget, called the Phone-o-graph (get it?), appears more self-conscious than it is. The inspiration was pure Hoosier sensibility: Leffers wanted a similar $500 speaker from Restoration Hardware and knew he could make one himself for a fraction of the cost. The guts are basic. A PVC pipe funnels music to the horn, which Leffers found at an Indian market in Lafayette Square. The design, though, is deceptively thoughtful. Discovery PORTER BOOKS & BREAD isn’t a place you stumble upon accidentally. You have to look for it, tucked in among the winding roads and renovated historic barracks of Fort Benjamin Harrison.
