Having affordable quality products is the biggest driving force in a thriving interiors business, according to Alice McMullin of homewares and furniture company McMullin & co. “And also, not having to follow a trend,” she quickly adds. “I just work from what we think is a great product and go with it. Alove of the bottle – the Queensland bottle tree, that is – inspired the design of this sculptural garden on Sydney’s upper North Shore. Two mature specimens, their elegant canopies in quirky contrast to the bulbous trunks, grace the front and the back; one ushers visitors to the front door, while the other provides the perfect spot for the owners to pause and soak up their surroundings. The couple bought the property in 2017, because of the calm, leafy neighbourhood, but, most importantly, its level block, “which would allow us to build a home that was useable and easy for my wife and me [to live in] as we got older,” says the owner.
