I was browsing through the Interweave Store the other day and noticed that it contains more than 3,300 knitting patterns. That’s a huge number! Of course, it’s just a fraction of what’s out there in the world, but still. The funny thing is, when Interweave started publishing in the knitting world, we were all about being pattern-free. Our first book, Jacqueline Fee’s The Sweater Workshop, published in the 1980s, used Elizabeth Zimmerman’s brilliant percentage system to design and fit various styles from scratch. “Free at last!” we touted it. One Saturday evening, my husband and I were at home, anticipating a quiet, relaxing weekend. I was in my lounge chair, which is covered in an old buffalo robe, with my feet up, knitting a sock and watching a favorite old movie. The phone rang and I sprang up to answer it, tossing the sock I was knitting on the chair along with my glasses. Steek is an old Scots word that means “a stitch in sewing or knitting.” For knitters, steeking has become the name of an entire process that culminates in cutting one’s knitting. The thought of cutting a garment you’ve spent considerable time knitting can be daunting, but I like to think of it as liberating! Why on earth would you choose to cut your knitting? The answer lies in a garment’s need for openings. For example, stranded colorwork is most easily and efficiently worked in the round because the patterns are always visible as they emerge. In addition, knitting circularly eliminates the need to purl, which can slow things down.
