Now Interweave Knits is taking a page from his book to spark the curiosity of knitters around the globe with knitwear inspired by the natural sciences: astronomy, biology, geology, and chemistry. This wondrous and whimsical issue of Knits began with a Big Bang: a colleague wandered into my office musing about his recent fascination with space and proposed a space-themed issue. An issue dedicated solely to outer space seemed a bit far out there for Knits, but I thought, “What about an issue…

I found myself in a ballroom overflowing with middle school–aged students. In fact, they were spilling from the room and filling the lobby of the large hotel. As one of the event coordinators, I was in the dubious position of trying to establish order among the chaos. I struggle to find a way to describe just how loud a room full of middle schoolers can be, but I can say that their energy, excitement, and enthusiasm for the day’s event was both impressive and awe-inspiring. They were assembled for Fashion Design, a competition in which students research, develop, design, and create garments that reflect a given challenge. The colorful, whimsical Arge Humeralis Pullover is based on the patterning of the Poison Ivy Sawfly (Arge humeralis) in its larval, or caterpillar, stage. This graphic pullover features a stranded pattern of dots and bumps in a hand-dyed yarn for an organic look. The Periodic Pullover is a modern, clean interpretation of the periodic table of elements.
