When the HomePod mini arrived late last fall, I finally saw an Apple smart speaker I could get on board with. The combination of added Siri features and the $99 price tag made purchasing the mini an easy decision. And I’m not the only one—the speaker sold out on Apple’s website within a few hours of going on sale in November. Move Widgets from Today View to Your Home Screen Widgets are a fun and dynamic way to spice up your Home screen, and you can easily get started by borrowing some from Today View (accessed by swiping right from the Home screen). If anything catches your eye, simply press your screen until it goes into jiggle mode, and then drag the widget to your Home screen. For the full selection of widgets, enter jiggle mode, then tap the plus icon on the top left, and select the widget you’d like to add. Previously, when an app requested access to the Photos app, you either denied access or approved it, and that was that. This could be uncomfortable if you wanted to edit one photo but didn’t want to give an app full access to your camera roll. Translate Text The Translate app’s core feature is its ability to translate typed text. With support for twelve language options, the app lets you enter a phrase in one language and then translates it to another, useful to travelers and language students alike. To do this, just open the Translate app, select the language you’re translating to and from (if you’ve set your iPhone’s language to English, it will appear as your default), enter the phrase, and tap Go. Travel by Bike with Cycling Directions Finally, you can get cycling directions from Apple Maps. This feature takes into account bike lanes and bike-friendly roads so that travel is easier and safer for cyclists. You’ll also see information about upcoming hills and warnings about where you can’t cycle. This feature is currently limited to a few big cities, but hopefully will expand over time. To get cycling directions, open Maps and then enter your travel destination in the search bar. Tap Directions and then tap the bicycle icon. You’ll see routes with information such as total climb, distance, and more. Tap Go to start your route. Skip Scrolling with Search Options I’ve gotten so lost while scrolling through my Home screen pages that I completely forgot what I was looking for. Not only does the App Library give you big ways to clean up your Home screen (more on that later), but it also gives you three easy ways to search for any downloaded app. Just swipe to your last Home screen page, then swipe left once more to access the App Library. Regulate Your Sleep Habits You can now set up a new-and-improved bedtime routine in the Health app in order to track your sleep patterns, establish a regular schedule, and wake to a gentle alarm. To set up a sleep schedule for the first time, open the Health app, go to the Summary tab, and scroll down until you see the option to Set Up Sleep. Tap Get Started and follow the prompts. If you’ve set a schedule already but would like to adjust it, go to the Browse tab and select Sleep. Pin Your Favorite Message Threads Even though I text my family chat every day, it can still get bumped down on my list of messages by other texts. With iOS 14, you can now pin your favorite conversations to the top of your message list to keep it visible. All you have to do is long press on the conversation of your choice, whether it’s a group message or a one-on-one chat, and tap Pin from the menu that comes up.
